A young boy with muscular dystrophy has an encounter with a weather forecasting legend who visited his school. (The weather forecaster goes around the country, talking about severe weather, and he happened to visit Johnny's school.)
I met a neat guy today.
We had a weather forecaster come to our school; in our Science class, we are learning about storms and severe weather, and this guy came to our school, where he visited our class. It was really cool!
The guy's name is Gary England, and he is a weather forecaster from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He is the weather forecaster for KWTV in Oklahoma City, and he really knows his stuff about the weather and what can happen during severe weather! He wrote a book called "Weathering The Storm: Television, Tornadoes, and Turmoil", and it has stories about some of the weather experiences he's had as a young boy and as a weather forecaster. It is a really good book; I've read it at the library.
Anyway, Mr. England showed us movies and pictures of storms, tornadoes, and other weather related stuff, and he was more than happy to answer any questions we kids had. He seemed really nice, and he even got to shake my hand. I told him I wanted to be a weather forecaster, but I wouldn't be able to because of my having muscular dystrophy; but then I told him I had gone on a storm chase once; and he wanted to hear about that, so I told him. He really seemed interested in my story, and so did my classmates. (I bet none of my classmates has ever chased a tornado! I have, and it was NEAT!!)
I told him I had been in a tornado, and I told him I had a weather radio; and I told him that I always watched the Weather Channel. He said, "My, but you ARE a little weather bug, aren't you?", and I just grinned at him! :)
He was really nice, and I got to have my picture made with him. (My teacher took the picture.) He also signed the picture.
It was a moment I will never forget! I met a weather LEGEND, and that is enough for me! It was really cool! :)
