A young woman originally from Kenya, Africa, writes of why her life presents her challenges at times, and how it compares to the life of other people.
I'd have a good life, if only....
1.) I didn't have to depend on other people to help me do things, including my husband, Roberto, who is already busy enough himself as it is;
2.) I were able to take better care of my children and my husband (my health isn't great, and it prevents me from doing more in my life, as I am seriously physically disabled and can't work any longer);
3.) I were born in America; my English is still not that good, and I still have trouble trying to figure out certain words in the English language or what they mean (I am so stupid at times!);
4.) I were not so skinny or sick looking, or looking like an old woman (my face is all wrinkled, and people sometimes think I am a senior citizen, which REALLY boils my lobster!);
5.) I were white (because I AM black, I sometimes get called a nasty name, and I sometimes get treated differently than non-Black people);
6.) I didn't have to depend on sticks, a walker, or a wheelchair to get around;
7.) I had gone to school longer and gotten a degree or get a career in Journalism instead of having to live on a disability check every month (this isn't helping me get ahead in life!);
8.) I didn't lose people in the September 11, 2001, terror attacks (my best friend, Stephanie Green, was killed in the terror attacks, when the plane hit the building; and I still can't bring myself to forgive those who did this horrible thing to our country) or that September 11, 2001, didn't happen; my life was so much happier then....
9.) I didn't lose my mother and father to a cold-blooded murderer; I still can't think about them without crying, and I wish my children had gotten to know their grandparents; and I wish my mother and father had gotten to know their precious grandchildren;
10.) I didn't have to go through all the emotional trauma when I had been raped and then burned, and then having to cope with having flesh-eating disease; I still have nightmares about all these things that happened to me, and I often wonder if I am going CRAZY!
So many other people have it so much better than I do, and I oftentimes wonder why I was destined to have all these bad things happen to me when other people have it so good! What did I ever do in life to deserve having all this fucking drama occur in my life? Was it because I was born in AFRICA instead of being in America, and is it because I am a Black woman instead of a woman who is white? What did I do to deserve having all of this awful stuff happen to me? WHY ME, and why not someone else? I don't think I can take any more drama or problems in my life; I am ready to go MAD!!
(((karen))) sad, powerfully written story...why do some people have to face more trouble and heartache than others? it's not fair...and you capture the emotions of this young woman perfectly! (((HUGS))) and love, karla. :)
