Tells the story of a woman who is in the hospital, recovering from injuries stemmed from a tornado. She broke her femur (it has a external fixator device on it; she suffered crushing injuries to that leg, and the EFD was put onto that leg to hold the bones together), injuries to her eyes (glass went into both eyes when a window she was looking out of exploded into her face), and internal injuries, as well as bruises and contusions. She is in ICU, recovering from her injuries, and Louisiana Sandusky is the nurse assigned to her care.
The young woman moans as she lies uncomfortably in her hospital bed. She is obviously in much pain, and she grabs my hand tightly in fear. Bandages cover her face, and she is not sure as to what is going on or what is happening to her. She is shaking scared, and I am the only one who can halfway calm her fears somewhat.
Michiko Osaka is forty years old, is of Japanese extraction, and she was injured severely in a tornado that hit our city last week. There were several injuries, but it seems that Michiko Osaka sustained the severest injuries. She sustained a compound fracture of her right femur (an external fixator device, which sort of resembles a cage with wires, is attached to her leg; this was necessary because the bones had been shattered, and it was the only way that the bones could be put together; or she would have faced amputation of that leg), numerous contusions and scrapes, eye injuries (from when glass flew into her eyes; she had been looking out of a window when the strong winds from the tornado blew it in, shattering it, and sending pieces of glass flying into her eyes; a bandage now covered her upper face, and her eyes, to protect them), and only God knows what else.
Michiko is in the Med/Surg I.C.U. ward, and she is improving slowly, day by day, but she still faces a long and uncertain recovery ahead of her. There is talk as to whether she will ever regain her sight or walk again; her injuries were quite severe.
Michiko is scared, and she is in a lot of pain. She has a NG (nasogastric, or stomach) tube inserted into one nostril of her nose, and she has already managed to pull it out once. She is now tied to the bed, soft restraints hold her hands in place, which does NOT bode well with her. She wants to get out of bed or be able to move, and she is getting rather annoyed at us because we are "restricting her freedom".
I only met Michiko Osaka last week, and she has already latched onto me like a leech; I am her comforter and her support system right now. She is a pretty woman (if you can overlook her injuries or the tubes in her); she has short, straight black hair, a round, moon face that is rather pale from fright at the moment, a supple mouth with pretty, attractive bow lips, and a short, compact body. She is very small in height, but she is rather heavyset.
I was at the hospital last week when the tornado hit; and a total of about 30 people were injured, including my ten-year-old daughter, Ronee', who sustained a concussion after being beaned in the head by hailstones. She was admitted for observation, and she ended up being released the next day. I had planned to spend my time with Ronee', but then Michiko came in, and I have been delegated to minister to her needs. I am still her nurse, and she has been my main patient for this past week.
I only hope that she will make it and that she won't sustain permanent eye or physical damage, as a result of her injuries from the tornado.
