A mother of many special-needs children writes why they are so important to her.
Don't ever think for one minute that just because you happen to have disabilities that you don't matter to me.
I am here to tell you that you DO matter to both your father and myself, and if it were not for God and His Loving Grace, we wouldn't be a family!
He gave us the opportunity to take in children nobody else wanted, and we happened to act upon it. We decided to take in special-needs children because far too many are lingering in foster care or are languishing in hospitals and institutions; and they deserve a far better environment than that! We chose you children because God gave us each and every one of you, and we are so blessed to have each and every one of you in our lives and in our hearts and home.
Sure, you may have heartbreaking handicaps that daily test your courage and your resolve, but you are NOT "mistakes". You are ALL beautiful and special in your own way, and you are ALL "perfect" in your father's and my eyes! We don't see your crutches, wheelchairs, braces, or other "appliances" you may use in your daily lives; all we see are beautiful, loving children who have taught us the true meaning of what it is to be loved and how TO love. You have taught both your father and I compassion, courage, and strength in overcoming tremendous odds, and you are all indeed special to us. You make me proud and honored to be your mother, and on this fast approaching Mother's Day, being your mother is especially rewarding and sweet.
I love each and every one of you more and more each and every day, and I want to take the time to personally thank each and every one of you for being our children!
