Karen Lynn Vidra, The Texas Tornado, click here to update your pages on AuthorsDen.

A little boy in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma writes of the tornadoes that hit his city on Thursday evening and then again on Friday evening, leaving many people rattled and scared. Charlie Buckett's home was damaged by the second tornado, and he is now staying with his aunt Tiny and uncle Hobie.
Charlie is my name, and I am six years old. I live in Oklahoma, in Oklahoma City.

For the most part, I like Oklahoma City, but today, I am not so sure. Last week, we had a couple of tornadoes hit. They hit one day apart from one another, and the second one damaged our house. We lost glass out of windows, and stuff went flying. I wasn't hurt, but mommy was; she is now in the hospital. She had a brain hurt*, and she was unconscious. She will probably be in the hospital a few days, and daddy is staying with her. Until then, my sister, Cierra, and I are at aunt Tiny and uncle Hobie's until mommy gets out of the hospital.

The tornado was scary. The sky turned green, like apples, and the rain came down, throwing ice balls with it; and the wind was blowing strong. It nearly picked me up off the ground, and it scared me. This was the first tornado. I wasn't up during the second tornado until daddy woke me up and carried me to the storm shelter, where we stayed until it went by. The tornado was growling like a big, mean, hungry dog, and the ground was shaking. It was really frightening, and I was hoping our house would be okay. When we came out of the storm shelter, our house was still standing, but the windows had been busted out, and there was glass and garbage and stuff all over our yard; and it made me cry. But I didn't cry so hard then until I heard that mommy had been taken to the hospital, as she had been hurt; and I was scared that she was gonna' die.

But mommy didn't die; she is still alive. She is in the hospital, where doctors and nurses are taking care of her and are making her better. She will be there for a few days, but then she will be home, here with me, Cierra, aunt Tiny, and uncle Hobie. And "Sauerkraut". "Sauerkraut" is my weiner dog, and he has been really scared since the tornadoes, plus he isn't used to being away from home. All he does is whine and hide under the bed I sleep in.

I sorta' remember the tornado that hit four years ago; but I was only two years old. I do remember seeing this big, black thing in the sky that looked like a fat snake, and it was sucking up things like a big sweeper; and it was storming really bad out. I or my family wasn't hurt, but I did lose my baby cousin, Hunter, in this tornado; the tornado sucked him up and it killed him. Other people died in that tornado, but I am glad I or my family did not. We were very lucky to not to get killed by that tornado!

I only hope we don't get any more tornadoes for a very long time here in Oklahoma City because two tornadoes in two days' time is a BIT MUCH for me to handle! And besides, it was a very bad tornado 'cause it hurt my mommy! :(

*Charlie meant "concussion".

strongly writen Karen, there is a contact of mine who is from a community I run online who lives in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and described a lot of his horror of what happened. I had wrote something on the vein of this one but it is a darker take -- the what if a tornado blown thru downtime Chicago -- it is up on my online journal at the address http://nickolaus.diary-x.com since my grace period here ran out. He described the sky turning a blackish grey during the storm. This is a unique perspective of a child telling the horror of the storm through their eyes. I am going to go on to read part two of this.

*tears* *swallowin' the lump in my throat* that last line got me...(((karen))) i loved this telling of nature's fury through the eyes of a child...who sees the ugliness...but processes it into a format that is easier to understand...i loved the way you wrote that the descriptions of the tornado "...the sky turned green, like apples, and the rain came down, throwing ice balls with it;..." and "the tornado was frowling like a big, mean, hungry dog..." well done! *poor sauerkraut! a stormphobic like us LOL* enjoyed...(((HUGS))) and love, karla. :)
