Johnny is doing much better since suffering the seizure. Johnny was just 7 years old at the time of this incident; he is now ten years old and is doing fairly well, all things considering.
Johnny awoke from his drug-induced sleep a few days after suffering the seizure, and one day later, he had the respirator tube taken out of his throat. He was now on oxygen, by way of a mask that covered his small face, but at least he could talk (although rather hoarsely at first).
He was also ravenously hungry, as we found out. The first question he asked when he opened his eyes (after he had asked the doctor where he was, and what had happened to him) was "Can I have a Coke? I am dyin' of thirst here; my throat feels as dry as the Mohave Desert!", prompting Dr. Emmons (and us) to burst out into laughter.
"Why, sure, little guy!" Dr. Emmons said. He had mommy go out into the hall (there was a vending area fairly close by, up the hall a little, just past the nurse's station), and she came back with a nice cold Coke Classic in a plastic bottle. She helped Johnny open up the bottle, and she carefully helped him drink his Coke by holding his head steady after she had removed the oxygen mask (temporarily) off his face. Johnny drank at least one half of it in several huge gulps--and then let out a rather loud burp. It was so loud I was sure the nurses heard it at the nurse's station, not to mention, the patients in the rooms near the room we were in! Johnny grinned weakly, and he looked rather proud of himself.
The day after this, Johnny was moved out of the PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit), and he was moved to a regular (private) Pediatric's room. He was feeling much better by now, and soon, he was asking if he could go home; but the doctors said no because he was getting new anti-seizure medication, and they wanted to make sure that he didn't have any adverse reactions to it. Whereupon, Johnny looked disgusted; but then Mommy broke out his Tetris game that he loved to play with, and he was soon engrossed in the game, his face a picture of total concentration. It was a good way to spend many long, boring hours in the hospital, and between interruptions from the doctors and nurses (or the lab personnel), Johnny made every moment spent with his beloved electronic handheld game count.
Johnny spent a total of one week and one day in the hospital, and he came through his ordeal, unharmed and unscathed. He was now back to his old self again, and nothing made us happier. It was a miracle he survived his ordeal at all; he could have very easily had brain damage from the time he wasn't breathing, but somehow, he escaped it, and he was still a normal little boy with a disability who wanted to get right back into the swing of things as quickly as possible.
