The continuation of letters, as written in diary form, by a young mother whose little girl is fighting for her life in the hospital.
Sunday, June 15, 2003~
I am still here at the hospital, at the bedside of my comatose little girl, Jacinthe MicKayla, who is fighting a bacterial form of meningitis that has left her very sick. She is still hanging in there, but she is far from being well. Doctors are still concerned about possible brain damage because she hasn't really responded well to the neurological tests they have done on her, and the news is still very upsetting.
Jacinthe doesn't need brain damage on top of everything else she has endured in her young life; she has spina bifida and is paralyzed; and she also has hydrocephalus and club foot, and she also has a weakened immune system. She has never been able to fight off colds or other illnesses that easily, and each time she has fallen ill, I have been absolutely terrified. She is also hearing impaired, and she communicates by way of sign language.
I talked to Dr. Stryker, her neurologist, earlier today, and he was the one who had told me the news. The very thought of my little girl being brain damaged on top of being physically handicapped is almost too much for me to bear! I wish that little nurse I saw yesterday was here, but she is off today, and I won't see her until tomorrow! She has been such an angel, and she has brought me such comfort and hope in the midst of this latest health crisis involving my little girl! I just WISH I knew her name...
Later, still Sunday, June 15~
I called work today, said I wouldn't be in as my little girl was still in bad shape; and I then called her Granpy and Granmy in Kentucky, and told them about Jacinthe. They were really upset, and they said that they were flying out first thing in the morning, and that they would be in Nashville sometime tomorrow afternoon or evening, so they could come to the hospital to see Jacinthe. I don't think that is such a good idea because Mother has breathing problems and is on oxygen, and to see her little granddaughter being so sick would only cause problems for her; and her husband can hardly get around, even on two crutches, thanks to rheumatoid arthritis; he is not in much better shape than his wife. But Daddy is bound and determined to see Jacinthe, and you can't even begin to try to change his mind!
I called my best friend, Gina, and told her the latest about Jacinthe; and I just broke down crying as I talked to her on the phone. I tried to keep from crying, but the stress of this past week has been building up, and right now I am scared as to what may happen next. I am so afraid that Jacinthe is going to die, and if that should happen, I don't know what I would do, as she is my only child, and she is such a blessing and joy in my life!
Uh oh, Dr. Stryker wants to talk to me, so I will continue this tomorrow. Wonder what he has to say....
