Louisiana writes about Ronee', who is presently in surgery to get a knee replacement, and the feelings that are presently running through her mind.
I am trying to keep my mind busy by throwing myself into my work, but somehow my mind keeps wandering back to my little daughter, Ronee', who is now in surgery.
Ronee' Le-Anne is just ten years old, only a little girl, but she is presently in surgery, having her right knee replaced, because her knee was damaged by rheumatoid arthritis, and it was getting so hard for her to get around, even on her forearm crutches. Her knee has been eaten away by the ravages of rheumatoid arthritis, and her knee has basically desintegrated, according to her last x-ray. There was very little in the way of cartilage; and bone was rubbing against bone when she walked. This was what was causing the intense pain she had been currently experiencing.
This isn't the first surgery that Ronee' has had, but compared to her last surgery, this surgery is nothing. This surgery should prove to be no threat to her health, and her doctors think that she will be in surgery for only an hour, an hour-and-a-half at the most. (She last had surgery at the age of six, when her appendix ruptured, and she nearly died; but she somehow pulled through. She also had surgery at the age of one-and-a-half after being involved in a serious vehicular accident. But she was far too sick to remember anything about those two surgeries.)
Ronee' has been through so much in her young life with her health; she knows how it is to spend weeks in hospitals, having to put up with doctors poking and prodding her, having to take nasty-tasting medications that cause unpleasant side-affects, or having to miss school because of her being sick again or having to go into the hospital again. Yet, through it all, Ronee' has remained incredibly upbeat, and she has recovered (fairly) quickly. Nothing seems to keep her down for long, and it isn't long before she is back to her former self during her road to recovery.
Until I hear from the Recovery Room, I am very busy working, gathering information about recent arrivals into the hospital, getting patients' names and medical histories, and comforting scared or upset (or even confused) patients.
But, as I said, my mind keeps drifting back to Ronee', and I mentally say a quick little prayer for her.

I am sorry if I haven't written until now (it is later in the afternoon), but we had a bad one come into the E.R. A young female firefighter had been brought in after she had been burned when a burning beam fell onto her after she had successfully rescued a little boy who had been trapped inside his burning home. The firefighter sustained second- and third- degree burns on her upper back and shoulders and suffered broken ribs in the accident, and she is now in surgery. They think she may end up being paralyzed.
As for the little boy she rescued, he is now in the P.I.C.U., fighting for his little life. He is currently in grave condition, and there is uncertainty regarding his recovery. He is currently on life support, and he doesn't seem to be doing very well.
AFter I got through obtaining the medical histories of both Brooklyn Marie Harrington (the firefighter) and little JaVon Demetrius Jackson (the little boy whose life she saved), and talked to the little boy's family, I went to see Ronee', who was now about to go to a regular room from Recovery. She was now out of surgery and had tolerated it very well, according to her doctor.

Ronee' was now lying in a bed in the Pediatric ward, a blanket covering her, and she was still sleeping heavily as a result of the anesthesia. An oxygen mask covered her small face, and her eyes were closed. Her face was quite pale, but she still looked great. Her knee was locked into a passive-motion device, which kept her knee, now bandaged, in slow but constant motion, to prevent any adhesions and/or scar tissue from forming. According to the nurses assigned to her post surgical care, her vital signs were stable, which was a huge relief on my mind.
