A young pre-teen girl writes of her struggles with learning disabilities.
Hi! My name is Summer Song Sandusky, and I am 12 years old. I also have learning disabilities.
Learning new things has always been difficult for me. I have to struggle with learning new tasks, and I often have problems with reading. Writing, not so bad, but my spelling is atrocious. (It's a good thing my computer has "Spell-Check", or there would be mistakes galore in this story!) I have dyslexia, which means that I see words or numbers backwards, and when I try to read, I have a lot of trouble with it.
I have always struggled with my problem, and at first, I thought it was because I was adopted into a new family (I was born in Korea, me and my twin younger sisters, Camey and Tammi all were), and I spent some time with a foster family when we came to America, but when I started school, I couldn't read, and I could just barely write. It was really awful, and no matter how hard I tried, I struggled to do my best, and my best turned out being pretty rotten.
I was always laughed at because of my problems, but mommy told me not to pay attention to those kids who teased me, and she helped me as best as she could. I then started getting after school help, and now my grades have improved so much (plus it helps having a computer with Spell-Check! LOL). I used to get D's in school; I am now getting B's and even some A's in all my classes. I am still in the Special-Needs class at school (I go to Eastview Elementary; in the fall, I will go to Donelson Junior High, where I will be in the 7th grade), but I have been doing much better. In fact, this year, I got all A's and B's in my courses, and my mommy and daddy were so proud of me. I was rather proud of me, too! :) In fact, my work has improved so much, in the fall, I will be able to help my new teacher with the kids who are having problems with their learning!
Thank God for computers and Spell-check.....hahahaha....or this "boertjie" would of struggled like hell......Shame not a laughing matter at all.....but a grammarfool like myself needs all the help t e c h n o l o g y...hope this is the correct spelling...no words....spell check at AD...needs!!

This book was written for children to stress the importance of being able to choose who gets to hug or touch them and being able to say NO if they don't want to be hugged or touched.
