A young girl learns to cope with her disabilities and people's reactions towards her.
I am feeling a little better today, not great, mind you, but I AM feeling better than I was a few days ago. I just got home from the hospital, and I have to stay in bed for a few days, and when I DO get out of bed, I have to use my wheelchair. I just had knee replacement surgery, and right now, my knee really hurts.
I have arthritis, and I have had to learn to live with pain since I was five years old. It isn't easy, but I DO manage on MOST days. I have to take medications to help with inflammation and pain in my joints, and I also have to have therapy two times a week to help with my range of motion, so my joints don't become stiff. I have to use crutches and wear leg braces in order to walk, and I sometimes use my wheelchair (like when I go to the mall or to any other place that requires an awful lot of extra walking). I hate being on crutches at times, but I am glad to just to be able to walk PERIOD.
I also have asthma and allergies, and that part of me is doing much better. I still take my inhalers at night before I go to bed or if I go outside (especially if there is a lot of pollen in the air; pollen is something that really bothers my asthma and causes it to flare up), and at night, I wear my oxygen, as I am prone to attacks more often at night than during the day, and I do this as a precaution. With my health history (having problems with my breathing in the past), I have to be especially careful, and I also have to avoid things like peanuts, penicillin, or bee stings at all costs, as a reaction to any of these things could possibly kill me if I don't get medical help right away.
Other than my arthritis or my asthma, I am doing great. Or WAS, seeing I just had knee surgery last week and just got out of the hospital today. I went to church this morning, just as I do every Sunday, but I don't remember much of the service; think I fell asleep before Pastor Bilkey could start preaching! And I didn't even sing with the choir, like I usually do or sing during the offering; I just sat there in my wheelchair, trying my best to stay awake. (I don't know what is in my pain medications, but boy, is it EVER messing with my head! YIKES! :( )
I know there are people who have it far worse than I do, but at times I forget that, especially if I am having a lot of pain with my arthritis, or if my asthma is acting up, and having a chronic illness like asthma OR arthritis is enough to try ANYONE'S patience, especially if they're a kid like me! Still, I AM grateful that I can get around, even if it IS on crutches or leg braces, and I am grateful that I can hear, see, think, talk, or do things most kids my age can do. Sure, at times I may be as slow as molasses, but I still get things done! :)
Man, this medicine stuff is really kicking me in the tail; I am sitting here at the computer, in my wheelchair, just a-yawnin' my head off! I think I am going to take a nap, and no, I am NOT going to church tonight! I am TOO tired, for one thing...Stupid medication! :(
Until next time, take care, and God bless!
With Love, Ronee' Le-Anne (will be 10 1/2 in just 4 days! :) ).
