I got the idea for this story after seeing the Texas Rangers play the Oakland A's last night at The Ballpark in Arlington in Arlington, Texas, last night; my twin sister and I went with a co-worker and her husband, and we all had a blast! The Rangers nearly lost when the Oakland team got four runs in the bottom of the ninth, with two out, but we managed to hang on and win 7-6. It was a thrilling game, and the Texas Rangers fans all went NUTS! :)
My little brother, Johnny, is a little baseball fan in every sense of the world. His favorite team is the Texas Rangers.
He follows all their games on tv or on the radio, and if he isn't listening to the games, I am sure he is dreaming of the day where he will enter the majors. That is, if he could because in reality, he WON'T.
My little brother is dying (he isn't expected to live to become a teenager or even an adult because he has muscular dystrophy; still, that doesn't keep him from dreaming. He fancies himself as another Pudge Rodriguez or Alex Rodriguez or even Carl Everett, who are with the current roster of the Texas Rangers (or were traded, as was in the case of Pudge; and when he was, poor Johnny CRIED!). He knows all about the players, and he knows their stats and everything; it is incredible how he soaks up the information and retains it in his memory! He dreams of going to Arlington, Texas, to the new stadium they have built out there, to see the Rangers play; and he dreams of meeting the players in person and obtaining their autographs. He has boxes full of trading cards, and he even has some of former Ranger legend, Nolan Ryan, who has pitched something like 5,000 strikeouts and 7 perfect games in his career. He even has Nolan Ryan's autograph; he met him at a sports function they had here in Nashville, and he was thrilled beyond words!
Now, we have been to the Nashville Sounds baseball games when they play here at home (Nashville is a minor league team), and although it isn't major league, they still thrill their fans, and they play like the majors. They are a good team, and the fans just love them. My little brother is certainly no exception, and he has pictures, cards, programs, and even an autographed baseball or two from the team members. He even has a few baseballs that were popped into the stands, and they happened to land right into his lap! (You can probably imagine the surprise on his face when THAT happened!)
We are trying to contact the Texas Rangers, to tell them about Johnny and his health situation, but so far we haven't heard from them. Maybe we'll get down to Arlington, Texas, way, and surprise Johnny by getting him to a game of the Rangers, and hopefully, he'll get to meet some of the current team. That would be a dream come true !
