A story about a little boy from Russia who was adopted into a family from Wyoming. Aiden Aleksander is six years old, and he has cerebral palsy.
Aiden is quick to laugh, and he isn't afraid of people; in fact, he is a people person, and the more people that are around, the more he enjoys showing off.
Aiden Aleksander Tottringer is only six years old (but will be turning 7 in a little less than a week; his birthday is on July 4), but he has had a life full of heartache and strife. He was born in Russia, near St. Petersburg, and when it was discovered that he was born handicapped, his young parents gave him up and took him to an orphanage in town. He had lived in an orphanage until just one year ago, when he was adopted by a family in America.
Aiden Aleksander, or "Double A." as he is called by his parents, is a sturdy little guy with rosy, pink apple-shaped cheeks, big, dark brown eyes, and a round face that makes him look like a mini teddybear. His hair is black and straight, and he is quick to laugh and smile. He looks like he may have some Asian blood in his background, but this hasn't been confirmed; little is known about his life prior to going to the orphanage, other than the fact that he had been abandoned by his birth parents and had been born handicapped.
He gets around on a pair of shiny blue Lofstrand crutches and wears braces on his stocky little legs; but his handicap hasn't really slowed him down. He can run a person over if one isn't careful, and he has been compared to a cheetah; he is incredibly fast on his crutches. (His problem was, at first, unknown, but at the age of one year, he was found to have cerebral palsy.) He goes to a special school for disabled kids, and every morning, he rides the bus with his friends, and he enjoys school very much. He loves being with his friends (especially Tyson and Trevor Gottfried, twins, and also Rico Martinez), and he loves singing songs and learning new things.
In the fall, he will start the second grade.
Aleksander has three older sisters (Torie, Richella, and Storm; all were adopted from Vietnam when they were babies; they are now 7, 10, and 12 years old), and two older brothers (Tighe and Tommy, who are twins and are both 15 years old; Tighe and Tommy are the natural children of the family, whose last name is Tottringer). Aleksander is the fourth of the children to be adopted, and the first to be adopted from Russia; and life for him is nothing but one big adventure after another. In fact, since being in America for a year, Aleksander has learned about baseball, basketball, and football, and he has grown to be a fan of all of these sports. He has also learned about foods like macaroni and cheese, hotdogs, salisbury steak and mashed potatoes, and fried chicken; and he loves just about all foods (excepting for peas or liver, thank you very much!). He also hates turnips and spinach.
Aleksander is a normal little boy in any sense of the word, but he is also a child with a disability, and sometimes he is teased. He doesn't let the teasing get to him, and he has shown to be assertive in nature (at times he has gotten into trouble for smacking his tormentors over the head with his crutches!). He then goes about his merry way, and acts like nothing has happened. His English skills are just about mastered, and he has grown to love America and all that it stands for. He especially loves the Fourth of July, which is his birthday, and he loves the fact that there are fireworks because he thinks they are just for him!
