The ongoing saga of Brooklyn Marie Harrington, the female firefighter who was injured while rescuing a child. She sustained nerve damage to her arms and burns and other injuries to her back and shoulders when a heavy beam that was burning fell on her.
Brooklyn Marie Harrington is a woman full of determination and courage. She continues to defy the odds, and she continues to make progress as she recovers from her injuries.
Brooklyn Marie is a firefighter, and she has been a firefighter for the city of Nashville, Tennessee, for approximately 3 years now. Prior to that, she worked for the NYFD in New York City, New York, but she came to Nashville before the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. She was there, visiting relatives, that day, and it left an incredible and indelible image on her mind and heart. (It ended up that she had lost several of her former co-workers in the terror attacks; and she is still plagued with nightmares and won't talk about what she had seen or witnessed that day.)
Brooklyn was injured several months back when she was rescuing a small child, a little boy, who had been trapped by a fire in his home; and by the time she had gotten to him, he was lying on the ground, unconscious and barely breathing. As she was taking him outside, a beam above the door had caught on fire, and it fell, striking Brooklyn on the upper back and shoulders. Before she hit the ground, she yelled, "CATCH!", and threw the still-unconscious little boy to another waiting firefighter. She sustained severe burns to her shoulders and upper back, and had a fracture of her shoulders, and she also suffered some broken ribs. She also had nerve damage to her arms when it was found that she couldn't move her arms that well. Needless to say, her firefighting career was now in jeopardy.
The little boy Brooklyn saved, Jevon Demetrius Jackson, aged 3, isn't doing as well as Brooklyn: he is still in a coma, and he was found to have significant brain damage. Doctors don't hold much hope for him.
Brooklyn is now out of the hospital, but she continues to recover from her injuries; and she continues to come to the hospital for daily physical and occupational therapy. She is moving her arms again, but not well enough to be able to do things for herself on her own, so she has her mother help her. She is worried about her job at the fire station, but her boss has already informed her that she will continue to be a mainstay with the department, and as soon as she is well enough to return to work, she will then be placed with the 9-1-1 dispatchers, and she will then learn to be a 9-1-1 dispatcher.
It may not be the physically demanding job of the firefighter, a job that Brooklyn has come to love (excepting for when the terror attacks occurred), but she will still be involved with firefighting, and she is eager to return to work. She is happy that she will continue to work with the community, and she is estatic to know that she will continue to work with the same bunch of guys who have come to become her friends and co-workers.
