The continuing saga of the little Maasai girl from Tanzania who came to America for lifesaving surgery.
This is Louisiana Sandusky again. I am here to update you on Bright Sunshine Tjahiti, who came to America all the way from Africa to have some lifesaving surgery.
Little Bright Sunshine Tjahiti is six years old, and she lives near the Ngorongoro Crater, in the country of Tanzania, in Africa, and she was born with spina bifida and has other health problems. She came to America to have surgery to correct scoliosis, which was starting to affect her breathing. She just came out of surgery not even an hour ago, and she is presently resting in Recovery, where she is in critical condition. She is doing fairly well, but they want to keep a close eye on her, since she IS so medically fragile. I just talked to her parents, and they are very much relieved; and they can't wait to see their daughter once she is out of Recovery.
I honestly don't know how she fared during the surgery itself, but Doctors Stryker and Frame both are confident that all went well. Her vital signs are very stable, and she has no signs of infection; and there is no sign of inner or outer bleeding. Both neurologists will keep me posted on her condition; but I have been praying for this special little girl who came from halfway around the world to have the surgery.
When I talked to her parents, they both cried with happiness. I did, too; I am always glad to give good news to patients and their families; that is probably one of the most rewarding aspects of my nursing career. I also met their other daughters, little Grace and her older sisters, Loiyan and Tajika, and they are just as beautiful as their older sister. I played with the two older girls, and I tried my best to make baby Grace smile, but all she did was stare wide-eyed at me.
