“I don’t know what I am going to do without Robert.” She sobbed.
Chapter 2
When Amy heard the gun cock, she knew that she was about to be shot. The gun went off, strangely quiet, she felt a bullet strike the side of her neck and her body jolt involuntarily. Everything was perfectly quiet after that. She lie perfectly limp and still, knowing that is the gunman saw movement he would shoot her again. Seconds ticked by slowly, as she lie there, bleeding, feeling the man standing over her. Finally she heard him turn to leave. Her thoughts moved to needing medical attention, trying to figure out how she was going to call 911. She wasn’t even sure she could move. Silence flooded in around Amy, threatening to crush her. She didn’t know what to do, try to move, get help, or bide her time for a little longer, to insure he was gone. Panic filled her when she realized that Robert was probably shot as well. She raised her head tentatively, listening for any sign the gunman was still in the house. All she heard was silence. Moving carefully, she made her way to the edge of the bed. Holding her bleeding neck she crept quietly to the living room, looking for her husband. She found him lying on the living room floor, bound at the wrists and ankles. Quickly she crossed the room, kneeling beside him, abandoning her own wound, she shook him with both hands. He didn’t respond at all. Then she saw the bullet wound in the back of his head, and knew it was too late, Amy was so distraught she began wailing. She wished that she had died too, so she didn’t have to live without him. She was lost in her own little world, only thinking of the husband she had just lost. When she heard the door open she thought it might be the gunman returning, but she had no desire to hide. He had already taken the most important thing, her husband, from her. She heard someone approaching, and looked up to see a paramedic standing over her. She couldn’t speak, and felt numb. The paramedics gently helped her out to the ambulance, where they examined her wound and wrapped a blanket around her. An officer came over to talk to her. When she told him she would she had been raped the officer told her that she would have to go to the hospital, where they could collect a rape kit, for evidence. The paramedics helped her get comfortable in the ambulance before whisking her from the scene. She didn’t care what they did to her, the husband she loved was dead, that was all that mattered to her. Grief so deep that tears wouldn’t even reach the depths of it took over and she wanted to curl up and die. She was lost in thought when they pulled up that he hospital, they unloaded the stretcher she was on, and wheeled her to a small exam room to wait. Not long after she was left alone, a nurse came to get vitals, and information. When she asked about a family member, Amy had to think, but couldn’t come up a relative that could come for her. The only person that she knew would come and get her would be her friend, Michelle. They had been friends since high school, and each knew they could count on the other for anything. In school, they had spent many late at night on the weekends, talking, laughing and sometimes crying. Michelle would help her through this too. If anyone could help her, she knew who to turn to. A few minutes later, a nurse poked her head in the room, to tell her that her friend was on the way. Relief like she hadn’t felt washed over her, just knowing help was on the way. She leaned back on the bed and closed her eyes.
Amy didn’t know how long she had been asleep, but when she opened her eyes Michelle was standing over her watching her sleep. Tears filled both their eyes, and Michelle took her into a hug. “I don’t know what I am going to do without Robert.” She sobbed. “I know, I know, but everything is going to be fine, you don’t have anything to worry about, I’m here now, and we will get through this together” Michelle spoke soothingly. Michelle didn’t try to get her to stop crying, or act like she could fix all of her problems, she was just there for her, ready to do whatever she needed, that was one of her favorite things about her.
A nurse came to take her to a larger, more private room, where she helped her change into a gown, and put her clothes in a bag for the police. The nurse who was quite talkative and friendly told Amy her name was Beverly, and that she was there to help her. After that the doctor came to collect samples. Michelle was at her side and held her hand the whole time. After she talked to a woman police officer about the ordeal and wrote out a report she was released from the hospital. In the lobby she realized something that stopped her in her tracks. “ I don’t know where I am going, I can’t go back to my house, it a crime scene, besides the fact that … “ She couldn’t finish the sentence. Speaking Robert’s name threatened to send her over the edge again, and she thought if she went back there, she might never return. “You don’t have anything to worry about. I’m taking you home with me, you don’t need to be alone anyway. I told you I was going to help you get through this and I intend to.” Michelle put her arm around Amy’s shoulders, and together they walked out to the car. The drive to the small, second floor apartment was a quiet one. Amy was too drained to talk, and too deep in grief to think straight.
