A special lady has touched the lives of many other than the members of her own family. This story is told by her friend, M'buti Sormiento.
If I had to choose a particular person who has made such an impact on me, it would have to be my good friend, Miss Louisiana Sandusky.
Louisiana is an angel in every sense of the word. She is a very caring, compassionate, giving, and loving person who helps those in need; and she has made quite an inpact on many people's lives, including mine.
I first met Louisiana Sandusky when I was 21; I had been burned, and I was in the hospital, and she was one of the many nurses assigned to my care and well-being. She tried her best to comfort me and to ease my pain, even when I was very nasty and mean to her; and she took it upon herself to nurse me back to health when I got out of the hospital. She was nice enough to let me stay with her, at her house, and I came to love her like an older sister (although we DID have our moments where we would fight constantly!).
When I first saw Louisiana, I was a little taken aback because she wasn't much bigger than a child, and she walked on a cane; but she did her job splendidly, and she loved her work. She didn't let the fact that she was physically disabled get in the way of her working, and she proved to be a very gutsy and inspirational person to those who were suffering. She had been injured in a childhood accident (she fell out of a tree when she was nine years old), and for a year or so afterwards, she was walking on crutches; but she then got off the crutches and was walking completely on her own. She walked on her own until about 6 years ago, when she developed arthritis in her back, and her back started acting up again; so she went to walking on a cane; and this is the way it still is for her today. She is often in a lot of pain, but you wouldn't know it because most of the time she has such a big smile on her face!
As I got to know Louisiana better, I found her to be a very sweet person, but she was all business when it came to her job; and she did her job very well. She took great pride in caring for her patients, and she went out of her way to provide for them and their needs. She was married to a very tall man named Bill, and they had a family of many adopted children from different nations; and many of the children were disabled. She showed me pictures of her family, and they were truly beautiful. I don't know how she managed to find time for herself between working and raising a large family, but somehow she managed.
Louisiana is a very happy person, and she happens to be very religious. She lets others know of Jesus Christ, and she isn't ashamed to share her faith. She will gladly pray for people, and she will go out of her way to try to encourage and support people in need. The more needy a person is, the more she seems to do. If a person needs clothes or food, she will gladly go shopping for that person, or if someone just needs a friend to talk to, she will make time in her busy schedule to visit that person. I know I have needed a friend many a time, and every day, she will call me, to see if I need anything. I tell her not to call me so much, but she is just that type of person, and I am glad I have her in my life! Sometimes she will drive to my house to see me or the kids; and sometimes she will bring me books to read (she knows I am a voracious reader!) or food for Roberto, the kids, and myself, and she will also bring old clothes for the kids that her kids have outgrown. She is always thinking of others over herself, and I think that is a very good thing!
I have been blessed because of Louisiana Sandusky, and I thank God for her; she has really helped me through some bad times, and she has stuck by my side, even when I was nasty to her! Not many people were willing to do that, but she did, and I think I am a better and happier person because of it!
