This time, as before she was standing in a hall, Robert at the other end, she walked to the end and still couldn’t reach him,

When Amy got back to the apartment, she decided to cook dinner for Michelle. She hadn’t been doing her share, and it was time she started. By the time Michelle got home, the smells of spaghetti filled the kitchen. French bread was in the oven and String beans simmered on the stove. Michelle had to take a second look on her way to the bedroom to change. “You’ve been busy today.” She stated, shock clearly showing on her face. Dinner was delicious, but Amy was barely able to eat, the queasiness had returned. Both of them decided to turn in early. They went their separate ways, headed to their own bedroom.
Once Amy was in bed, she drifted off to sleep, but was soon swallowed up by a dream. This time, as before she was standing in a hall, Robert at the other end, she walked to the end and still couldn’t reach him, something told her to start walking to the other end, and when she did, Robert followed, but when she turned around, Robert went back the other way. Amy got so frustrated, her eyes filled with tears.
When Amy woke the next morning, her pillow was wet, and she had to think to remember why. Then she remembered the dream from last night. Amy got up and after she ate breakfast, went for her morning run. As she was sitting down to lunch she was thinking about the love that Robert had shared. It hit her that after the rape, Robert might not have loved and desired her as he had before. He might have even left her, because she was “Damaged Goods”. When she had married, they had promised each to the other, in everyway. She had broken her wedding vows. Despair, deep and heavy pressed on her so hard, she couldn’t breath. For a while she thought she might die, the despair left her gasping for air. Tears chased each other down her cheeks and sobs rose from her throat. Stumbling to the couch, Amy lay down and curled into a fetal position. She had betrayed her husband. The pain of knowing that went right to her heart. When Michelle got home from work, she found Amy huddled on the couch, still sobbing.

Jabar bought a paper at a newsstand near his apartment the day after the robbery and rape. One the front page was a story that caught his eye. A young couple was attacked in their own home. The husband was killed, but the wife survived. Panic filled him as he read on. He was sure the wife, Amy was her name, he read, had told the police everything about him, like what he looked like. He would have to do something to make sure she could never put him away. As he headed to his truck to go to work, his mind was already formulating a plan.

It took Michelle most of the evening to convince Amy that she hadn’t had a choice in being raped, and that had Robert survived, he wouldn’t have left her or thought of her as damaged. He would have loved you, and he would have supported you, and helped you get over being raped, not shunned and abandoned his wife.

Jabar had parked his truck across the street from Amy’s house about two o’clock and had been sitting there ever since. He quickly figured out she wasn’t staying at the house. He should have figured she wouldn’t stay in the house where her husband had died. She would stay with a friend or family member. Getting rid of her had just got much more complicated. He pulled his truck back on to the street, headed for home. He would have to think about this more. There was still a chance he might catch her at the house, he would have to keep an eye on it, but he wasn’t counting on that alone. Jabar knew he had to find out where she was staying, but didn’t know how to go about it without someone getting suspicious. This wasn’t going to be easy, he could already see that.

Amy thought about what Michelle said. It made her feel better, but she wasn’t totally sure it was the truth. She didn’t see how could have loved her, or wanted to be with her, knowing their marriage had been compromised. She would have been alone in the end. Nothing would ever convince her otherwise. Robert wouldn’t have been able to stand her, and she might not have been able to stand herself. Amy was pulled out of her thoughts by the ringing of the phone. She crossed the room to answer it. She hung up the phone a few minutes later, not feeling much better. The call had been someone at the police station telling her that her house had been cleared as a crime scene, and she could return to it whenever she wished. Amy had no desire to return to the home she had shared with her husband, but she knew she would have to at some point, to be able to move on with her life, or what was left of it. Life had changed for her, and it would take time to adjust to it. At some point she was going to have to think about getting a job. That was going to be a major change in it’s self, Amy had been a housewife since she married Robert 7 years ago. She also had to decide weather to live in the house or sell it and get an apartment of her own. If she was going to start over, it might be best to get her own place. As much as she would like to, she couldn’t live in the past. To survive this, she had to make a new life for herself. She didn’t have to leave everything behind, but Amy didn’t need to try to live the life that she had with Robert. It was as dead and gone as he was.
