Many people do not understand that even though I am disabled, I am much more than my disabilities. I may not get around as well as many people do (especially now; I just got out of the hospital from an infection in my knee I had surgery on last month), but I still can get around! I may use crutches (or a wheelchair, which is what I am currently using until I start therapy tomorrow; I get to start walking tomorrow, and I CAN'T wait!), but I am still able to get around!
I am also very smart, and people sometimes think that I am not smart because I am disabled. They think my brain is disabled, and it is anything but! I am very smart, and I have done well in school! I will be going into the fifth grade in September, and I have always loved and enjoyed school!
I am also talented. I am not bragging; it may sound like I am, but I am NOT! Really! I have always loved to sing, and singing comes very easily to me. I sing country and Cajun music, and I also can sing rap, rock, or even soul! I love ALL music (well, ALMOST; I can't stand big band! LOL), and I especially love country/western and Cajun music! I also love gospel music!
I am also fortunate because I have a family who loves me, and even though I am adopted, I really have never felt like I was because the parents I have now are the ones I have really ever known, and I have been with them for a very long time, ever since I was a little bitty baby. I also have been told that I look a lot like my mom, and when people find out that she isn't my real mom, they are always surprised! They go, "You mean you're ADOPTED??", and I say, "Yeah! So what if I am! My mommy is my mommy, and she's the only mommy I have ever known!", and then I tell people that I was adopted as a baby.
Yeah, I may have my health problems, but I am a lot better off than many people. As I said earlier, I can walk, and I also can see, think, hear, talk, and figure things out. I am not stuck in a wheelchair ALL of the time, and I am certainly NOT bedridden! I also don't have kidney or liver problems, or stuff like diabetes, cancer, or muscular dystrophy, things that can kill a person. I may have breathing problems, but they are getting better as I get older, and Dr. Emmons says that if I continue to do as well as I am doing, I just may be off the oxygen COMPLETELY by the time I am 13! That would be great! (I wear oxygen only at night, when I go to bed. I wear it as a precaution, and besides, I have more of my attacks at night then in the day.) I don't know if I will outgrow my allergies to peanuts or beestings or penicillin, but even if I don't, I know well enough to stay away from these things, as they can harm me. Maybe even KILL me. So I just don't bother with these things; leave well enough alone, you know???
I also am lucky because I have the Lord Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour; I accepted Him into my life two years ago, and ever since, my life has been full of blessings! I have had many good things happen to me since becoming a Christian, and I am able to witness to others about Jesus. If I can be a positive role model to kids, especially if they are disabled, and teach them about the Saving Grace and Love of Jesus, then I am doing my job as a Christian, and that really makes me very happy, especially if they come out and admit that they want Christ into their hearts.
With everything that has happened to me, HOW can I say that I am NOT fortunate? I think I am a very lucky kid indeed....Many people do not have it nearly as good as me, and I guess this is why I am happy I am the way I am. Things could be a lot worse for me, and this is why I try to make every moment count, and this is why I try to be happy, even when things aren't looking their best.
