When Michelle climbed into bed that night, she was praying, thanking God for all he was doing. A job and an apartment were a great start for Amy.
As Amy dressed to go job-hunting several days later, she was listening to the radio when a song came on that made her halt. It opened with the line “When you think of me, remember the way I used to be. To her, it seemed Robert was speaking to her though the radio. Amy stood speechless, still holding the hairbrush as the song continued. “Remember the times I held you tenderly” was the next line that reached out to her. At that moment, she realized that she didn’t need to worry about how Robert would have treated her after the rape, he had loved her and that wouldn’t have changed. When the song finished, Amy stood mesmerized for a few moments, until she saw the time and decided she need to get a move on, to her to the first interview. Amy had 3 interviews lined up that day, all of them with moderate salaries. She walked out to her car and unlocked the driver’s side door. Robert had bought this car for her a year after they married, so she would have her own way to go places when he was at work. The police had brought it over just yesterday. He hadn’t ridden in, or driven this car many times, they used his car whenever they went places together. Starting the car, and backing out of the parking space, Amy headed out for the day. It was a long day, but well worth it, 2 of the jobs seemed interested in Amy, and promised to call her when they finished interviewing. On the way back to the apartment, Amy drove past her house. Her eyes filled with tears when the house came into view, all the memories she shared with Robert in that little house came flooding back. She had to pull to the curb to regain her composer. If driving past the house, not even going inside was this hard, going inside might be impossible.

Jabar couldn’t believe his eyes. As he sat across from the house, where he had been all afternoon. He was about to give up for the day when down the street came the woman he sought. He watched her pull over to the side of the street and sit for a few moments. Jabar thought about acting now, but decided to follow her to where she was staying, that way, at least then he could come back later, and finish her off. When she pulled back out on the street, he followed at

a distance, so he wasn’t seen. Amy drove into an apartment complex. He pulled over to the curb, and watched as she parked and went up the stairs. When she was inside, he drove away, noting the apartment she had gone into. He would be back, when he had planned his attack. He would make sure she was never able to testify against him.

It occurred to Amy to ask about an apartment for rent in this complex while she was scanning the newspaper the next morning. She got dressed right away and headed down the office. Amy was elated when she heard there was one open right down the door from Michelle. She looked at it, then gave the manager her first months rent. Amy gave Michelle the good news over dinner. “I can’t believe we are going to be neighbors!” she said, while knocking her chair over when she stood up to hug Amy over the table. They started making plans to get Amy’s stuff moved it, but Amy froze at the thought of going into that house to get her things. “It’s ok, we’ll just get movers to pack up and move your stuff.” Michelle assured her, and that seem to make her relax again. Amy decided to buy a new bed and living room suit, to help making a new life for her self easier. Michelle went with her the next day while she picked out both the bed and living room furniture. She finally settled on a couch that was dark blue with light blue vertical stripes. Amy also bought a chair that was identical to the one in her favorite spot in Michelle’s living room. When they were done shopping, both women decided to lunch at an outdoor café.

One of the places Amy interviewed with called after lunch the next day to say she had gotten the job. She went to work the following Monday. Knowing she had a job relieved some of the stress from Amy’s life. Michelle offered to get Amy clothes from the house, when she heard of the job. Amy was relieved that she didn’t have to face that house, or bedroom, because she didn’t know if the would or could have been able to. Amy and Michelle watched an old Shirley

Temple movie that night, one when she was a very small child. After Michelle headed to bed, Amy sat in her chair by the window and prayed, Thanking God for providing for her, in only a way that he could. She wasn’t aware that her tormentor had found her, and he was planning his next attack.

When Michelle climbed into bed that night, she was praying, thanking God for all he was doing. A job and an apartment were a great start for Amy. She had really worried for a while that Amy might not bounce back, but just keep sinking deeper and deeper into her despair and grief.

The next few days were hectic, as Amy moved in and started her new job. Saturday, as they sat on Amy’s patio, sipping lemonade. Both of them were too tired to talk. Amy was the first to break the silence. “ I can’t believe the way my life has change in the last 3 weeks. I went from being a wife and homemaker to being a widowed member of the workforce. I was so used to being provided for and sheltered, now I am having to provide for myself and feeling like a tornado ripped the shelter from over my head.”
