Melissa Escamilla lets her friends know what has been new with her. She was the one who had been rendered a quadriplegic from an elevator accident.

My friends~

This is Melissa Escamilla. I am sorry if I haven't written in a while (I had to learn how to do practically everything all over again since becoming paralyzed in that elevator accident last year, plus it ISN'T easy writing with a pen stuck between my teeth; that takes such a long time to do!), but I have had it rough this past year.

First of all, I must pass along the sad news that mi madre, Maria Josephina, died. She died on Mother's Day; she was found dead in her bed, and nobody really knows what happened or WHEN it happened. Paco was the one who found her, and he was the one who had called me. She was only 55 when she died, and she had been sick for so long. We knew that her death was inivitable, but we just didn't know it would be THIS soon. Paco and I have been beside ourselves with grief, and I still find myself crying most days.

Paco has been well, but he HASN'T been well, His emotions have been a wreck, and he has taken to drinking. I am scared that he is going to get into a wreck or end up paralyzed like me, and everytime he goes out, I fear for him and his safety. He goes to the bar at least twice a week, and sometimes he comes home, pretty soused.

I haven't been doing much since getting out of the hospital except trying to help Mama' and helping out Paco; but at times, it was a struggle because Mama' was so sick, and it hurt to see her suffering the way she did. Ever since that fall last year, when she cracked her head and ended up in the hospital with that concussion, her health had taken a dramatic slide downward, and she just got worse and worse. We tried our best to care for Mama', but at times it was next to impossible, especially with ME being totally paralyzed; but we ended up having to put her in a nursing facility not far from our place.

I am still on total disability, and there is very little hope that I will able to get back some of my usage of my limbs. In other words, don't expect any improvements other than the ones I have already had. Even with all the physical and occupational therapies I have had at the Rehab Center, I am still able to move only my head and my arms. My hands and my legs, as well as most of my body, is still functionally useless, and I am still NUMB. It feels like most of my body is DEAD! NO feeling whatsoever! I am still unable to work, so I spend most of my days, sitting in my wheelchair or lying in my hospital bed, feeling sorry for myself..and worrying about Paco, especially when he comes home, drunk.

I will write more as time permits, but right now, I have the crick from HELL in my neck; my neck is REALLY annoyed at the moment, plus I am starting to get a cramp in my teeth from my writing this down!

Until later, Friends, please take care and PLEASE drop me a line! I am still at Mama' 's place!

With much love, your friend, Melissa Escamilla. (((HUGZ)))) to each and every one of you!

Oh Karen this is such a sad story....bad I had to giggle at one point....sounds so much like home to me.....hehehehe!!

And this line....I know it was ment to sound sad but it made me laugh
I am starting to get a cramp in my teeth from my writing this down!

I get cramps in my legs trying to keep my keyboard on my knees to type this.....hehehe..
Yes its on my lap.....I have short legs and must point my toes trying to balance the damn thing.
My back gets tired from sitting on a high chair..so I have a two seater sofa that I sit on...with my dictionary right next to me....just in case you throw me with a word I do not know....lol!! And something nice to chew on!!

Take care....and I promise I will stop giggling here....you have an imagination like a "giant angel" Karen!!!

Love
