Chapter 10

Michelle went to visit Amy several days later, a plan set in her mind. “Amy, I know you haven’t been sleeping the past couple of weeks, and you are going to get some sleep today. I can’t watch over you at night, but I can during the day. I want you to go get ready for bed, and while you sleep, I am going to hold your gun and make sure no one hurts you.” Amy headed to the bedroom too emotionally and physically spent to argue. When she was settled in bed, Amy joined her in the bedroom and took the gun.

Amy’s head was barely on pillow, before she was drifting off to sleep. A dream instantly filled her head. She was back at the house, the gun pressed in her side. The gunman was leading her to the bedroom, she wanted to fight, wanted to run, because Amy knew what was going to happen. He was getting the jewelry and tying her up. She tried to fight him, tried to yell, and tell Robert to run. When he came back from tying Robert up, everything happened just as before. When he shot her, she felt her spirit rise out of her body, and float along with the gunman as he went to the living room and shot Robert. Amy tried desperately to stop him, hit him or grab the gun from his hand. It was like she was a ghost; her hands went right through him. After the gunman fled, she watched Robert’s spirit fly away, and then her body came staggering into the living room and try in vain to save him. Amy felt the presence of someone next to her, and looked over to her right to see the spirit of Robert floating next to her. Amy then felt herself drifting downward, to the scene below. When she felt her feet hit the floor, Amy looked around frantically for Robert. She found him, standing behind her. She watched in awe as he began to melt and merge into her shadow. Amy heard a faint whisper saying, “I’ll never be further from you than your shadow.”

Michelle watched Amy closely as the slept. For a moment her face was relaxed for the first time in days, then she watched as tension
filled her expression. Michelle knew she must be dreaming, and thought about waking her, but knew how much she needed this sleep.

Amy awoke slowly, disoriented, and instantly grabbed for her gun. Panic filled her when it wasn’t on the nightstand. What had happened to her? Letting her guard down could have gotten her killed. Sleeping she was a perfect target for whom ever was after her.
She felt someone near the bed, and knew it must be her attacker. Looking up cautiously, relief, greater than she could imagine filled her at the sight of Michelle sitting over her, guarding her from harm. She told Michelle about the dream over coffee on the patio, watching the setting sun.

Jabar was waiting in the shadows while Amy sat on the patio with her friend. Tonight was the night, and he was ready. The knife he held in his right hand gleamed in the moonlight. He watched the upstairs window carefully. Finally, about 9:00 the lights went off, he waited 30 minutes to make sure she was asleep, and then quietly he crept up the fire escape, and removed the window screen that he had loosened the other night. Using the knife, Jabar broke the lock on the window. Slowly he climbed in the window, looking around to get his bearings. The bed, where Amy was sleeping soundly was to his left. Silently, he made his way to the bed. When he was standing over the sleeping woman, he drew the knife back, ready to stab. Suddenly Amy turned over and opened her eyes.

Amy slept better that night than she had in months. She awoke 30 minutes after she lay down. A feeling of panic filled her when she realized that someone was standing over her. Amy turned over, ready to fight. What she saw terrified her, her kidnapper stood over her, a knife poised to stab. In a quick motion, the knife fell, landing in her shoulder. The second time the knife fell, Amy grabbed for her attacker’s hand. The battle went on for several moments, until Amy got the knife turned, toward the man. Suddenly the man lost his balance, and fell on top of her. When Amy pushed limp form of this man off her, she saw the knife lodged in the middle of his chest.

Relief like she hadn’t felt in months filled her as she left the hospital a few days later. The person who had tormented her for so long was gone, destroyed with the weapon he sought to use on her. This feeling of total freedom was amazing. Amy would finally be able to go on with her life,

and grieve the husband she had lost, in a different way. He may be gone from her sight, but he was never farther away than her shadow. She would get through this, it wouldn’t be easy all the time, but she could do it. Michelle would be there to help her, as well as her new friend, Carol.

Being back in the house had a different feel than she thought it would. There was a peace of being in this place where her husband had died. She walked to the bedroom, and for the first time in months, looked at the place where she had been raped. It took on a new meaning, to see this place, when she knew the man who had done that to her, was dead, destroyed by his own weapon. She would leave this place with a new sense about herself, and all that had happened in the place. Many changes had taken place, some good, some bad, but she could accept all of them now, and move on with her life. Robert would always be a part of her life, past and present that she knew for sure. He had been her husband for 5 years, and now he was only a shadow in her life, there but not like he was before. He would always be like a shadow in her life.
