An update about M'Kaya Mnjama's best friend, Wendie, who has since moved to Syracuse, New York, to be with her grandmother, Rose. She is presently in the hospital, recovering from a nasty kidney infection, as she writes this.
Hi. Wendie Malick, here.
I am not feeling my best at the moment; I am presently recovering from a nasty kidney infection that has been about the worst one I have had so far (and believe me, I have had a LOT!). I still feel feverish, and I am still not very hungry. I am no longer nauseated, but I just don't have much of an appetite.
I have been in the hospital for about three days, have at least several more to go before the doctor will even THINK of releasing me. I went into the hospital when I woke up several days ago, in excruciating pain. Grandma Rose took me to the Emergency room.
I was then admitted, and I have been here since at Syracuse General Hospital, in the Nephrology Ward (kidney and urinary tract, for you who don't know or understand "Medicalese").
To give you a brief bio, my name is Wendie Josephine Malick, and I am 35 years old. I am the older of the three girls in my family (my two younger sisters are named Wren and Winter), and we also have an older brother, Wessley, who is 39. Of us kids, I was the only one who was born handicapped. I was born with spina bifida, and I am totally paralyzed from the waist on down; and I walk on forearm crutches. I also wear leg braces on my legs. I have always had to use crutches or leg braces. I used to have a wheelchair, but I lost it in the terror attacks against our nation on September 11, 2001. I used to work at the Twin Towers, along with my best bud, M'Kaya Mnjama, but we were on break when the attacks happened, and there was no time to go back to get my wheelchair.
We lost a lot of coworkers in the terror attacks, and ever since, I have been incredibly sad. For a while, I thought I had lost M'Kaya, because I didn't see her for a long time, but it ended up that she got on a train and went to her mother's in Tennessee; and that night, she ended up in the hospital with an overwhelming infection and ended up having to get her one leg amputated. She already had M.S., and now she had a totally new problem to face. She was sick for a very long time, and I thought she was going to die, but she did not.
For a while, I had lost track of M'Kaya, but then I heard from her, and she said that she was getting ready to come back home to New York, and that she now had a boyfriend she had met while she was in the hospital. His name was Franklin Jefferson, and he was the size of a football player. He was BIG, a mountain of a man! He was a physical therapist, and he made good money.
She then came back, and I got to meet Franklin Jefferson, and I thought that he was cute, even though he WAS big. He may have been big and brawny looking, but he had the personality of a teddybear, and he was very good to M'Kaya. It was soon apparent that they were more than good friends: they were very much in love.
Now, M'Kaya and Franklin have been married for nearly a year, and they are expecting their first child, a little boy they plan on naming Stephan Paul Franklin Jefferson. (Or something to that affect.) They are very happy together, and they call me often, just to check up on things.
(I hope they know I have been in the hospital...I would absolutely LOVE for them to surprise me with a visit!)
I no longer live in New York City. I moved to Syracuse, New York, to be with my granny, Rose, because I just wasn't making it in New York City since losing my job to the terrorist attacks. Nobody was willing to hire me, a disabled woman on crutches and leg braces, so I went to Granny's, and I am still getting disability pay every month. It isn't the same as working, but at least I am getting SOME money every month! It's better than NOTHING!
Syracuse, New York, is a lot quieter than the hustle-bustle of the Big City, but I kind of like the peace and quiet. It is so serene, and one can hear themselves think, something I could NOT do when living in New York City! Plus there are HUGE yards and TREES, and the air is so clean and fresh! Yeah, I miss the Big City, but I am getting used to this so-called "country" life!
Oh, crap..Time to do a specimen sample for the vampires; gotta' go! (LITERALLY! LOL)
Will write more as time warrants. HOPEFULLY, the next time I do, I'll be OUT of the hospital!
Love, Wendie Jo Malick, Syracuse, New York, July 19, 2003.
