     A friends betrayal

After I was divorced, I went into the restaurant business. I had lots of friends, but one in particular was a gal I used to waitress with before I owned the business.  We were so close they  called  us "wheels that go round together" "Two peas in a pod"and similar sayings. She would come and stay with me whenever she was having a difficult time, and over a few years we came to trust each other implicitly.

She had a husband but they were apart more than together. He was a seaman, and she would be alone for long stretches of time. One year they were having a really bad time , he had lost money gambling that had been saved for a new home.
They finally divorced, and in the transition Kerry came to live with me and work in my restaurant.
After about 3 months she seemed adjusted, and happy as can be expected.

We talked about her finding a place of her own. She started seeing  a man who came in the restaurant. He took a subway to work which was right next to the restaurant and would park his car in my lot. I had several people who gladly payed to park there, I charged only a small fee.

This man came in every evening after work, to unwind with  a few drinks before going home. He was married. We knew very little about him I told Kerry I thought it was a bad idea to get involved. She didn't listen. The affair became very hot and heavy, until they were talking about going away together, just leaving everything and starting over.

When I realized Kerry was sneaking the man in my home every chance she could, I told her she would have to leave. Besides, she had changed and was acting unlike the Kerry I had come to know and admire. We started to have arguements. It was not a very good situation, I still hoped for the best for her.

This continued for several more weeks, until I had to go away for a few days. I told her I would like her to be gone when I got back. She could still work for me if she wanted to, but not live with me. she said and did some really nasty things at this time, but I tried to be understanding of her situation. I began to realize she had come to resent me,since her affair began, and I knew it was because of him.

Just before I went away , she apologized and said she was sorry for the way she had been acting. She said  that she had found a place and would move out, but continue working for me if  that was okay.  I was relieved, and said of course it was.

When I retured home, Kerry was gone. So were  most of my clothes, all my jewelry, some cash that she knew I kept at home . Everything of value except the large pieces of furniture was gone. Understand that I had known and trusted her for years, and could not dream of anything like this happening . I let her close my registers at night in the restaurant, and put the money in the bank, she had a key,I trusted her.

She and her lover, had run off together, the day after I left, so they must have planned it. I found out later they had rented a Uhaul and moved everything they wanted out in the middle of the night, including my best art,and other goodies from the restaurant as well.  Since Kerry had a key,I had to change all the locks in both home and restaurant.

To make a long story short, they had gone to Canada, where he had originally come from. His wife had him searched for and eventually he was found with Kerry. It was about a year after they had left. I pressed no charges, and put it down to a lesson learned.

I never saw Kerry again, and heard only that she had remained in Canada, while he had gone back with his wife, and  they moved to another state. Imagine, she took him back, life is strange. That was the first  time I had ever been robbed. I called it rape, because after hearing how rape feels, it's the closest thing to it, to be robbed like that from your most trusted friend.

Wow, what a powerful write and a tragic tale. Sometimes I think trust is as painful as love. Well, you can't have one without the other.

I agree, your chosen title is extremely apt in this situation. Absolutely.

I can't think of a lesson to learn from this. I mean, the first thing I think of, is to watch my back... not to trust too much, but that's like cutting off one of my feet... this is a challenge to be sure. Have you figured out the lesson since this happened?

Thank you for having the courage to write this story. CALL IT RAPE is well written, and flows so smoothly, I was done before I knew it. I was held captive the entire time.

I look forward to reading more of your stories.

Hugs,
Mari

I heard a comment a few months back which applies: times change but people don't. Glad you "rolled with the punch" because things really do eventually balance themselves.

First, I'm very sorry to hear that this happened to you. It must have been awful. I like your writing style; it's clear, with no excess wording, to the point. I hope that, by writing this down, you have healed from the injury. I know it won't heal completely.

Eileen, what a compelling write and horrific story to tell. It takes courage to bare one's soul pierced by betrayal. The matter-of-fact tone worked well here. No hystrionics, just the information. Well done!

A painful story to be sure. Some of the best lessons learned are the toughest to experience. As an aside? I believe that compassion is not something you "have". Compassion is something that is borne out of pain - and this, you have. Thanks for sharing your pain.

Tami

Thanks for this story which you narrated in a somewhat poetic way. In the old pharaohic days, the egyptians built sphinxes which had a human face in the front but looked like a beast in the back of the structure. This was explained later on. Human nature and behaviour are such that they are humans only in the front view but once you nventured to look beyond the face, you may end up seeing with strange beings like Kerry. i really do not take such fables seriously as it may deny one to deeply interact with human beings in fear of being cheated or destroyed. But still there is some truth in sphinx explanation. Sorry dear for whatever happened to you

I read none of the comments to this piece because I couldn't. I've got a private story to tell you that may be posted here in the future but I personally wanted to share it with you first. Honey, that is the worst of rapes. I'm quite certain you have overcome it and if I'm wrong you have my most ardent prayers. Love,

Hi Eileen
This is the first of your stories that I have read. I can see
why you needed to write it. It does stir one to wonder what shifted
inside of her. Very interesting he went back to his wife.
One thing I've learned that I would advise any married woman--IF your first choice is to make it through the affair of a mate it helps to remeber that at the bottome line-- a wife IS number one until she is not a wife anymore. Second women and the men who court them are sorely kidding themselves as long as they are in the back seat.
Much love, Vicky

the worst outcome of a situation such as this is that forever and always you have a little glimmer of "maybe" i can't trust this or that person. even though you forgive-regaining your original innocense about friendships is impossible. the analogy to rape though...would take your missing aperatures and turning those into pain inflicted on you physically as well. albeit, i am sure that you felt ill to find such maltreatment upon your return home. hard lessons are the worst.

I know how it feels to be betrayed by someone you love and trust. It is a pain that is hard to overcome. Time and love and Him heals all. Great story.

Rape describes what you went through flawlessly. I've been there and it sucks. I hope your writing about it has softened the pain. Don't let it erode your goodness.
