The two of them were the best of friends: shy, blonde, blue-eyed Johnny, and outgoing, dark-haired, and black-eyed Jose'. They had been friends for one year now, before Johnny had been forced to go to a different school due to kids' taunts and teasings.
One year later, they still remain the best of friends.
Being friends with a boy like Johnny isn't easy because when most people first see him, they tend to feel sorry for him. Johnny is in a wheelchair and wears braces on his thin legs because of muscular dystrophy, and he also has seizures from time to time; and he is often sick. He is also on oxygen when he has problems with his breathing acting up; his lungs have gotten weaker. People often don't understand that Johnny is dying of a neuromuscular disorder and because of it, he won't live long enough to become a teenager, let alone, an adult.
They would just as soon ignore him as though he doesn't even exist, or redicule him, making him feel worse than he already does.
However, Jose' doesn't see just the surface when he is with Johnny. Oh, he knows his best friend is in a wheelchair, that he has a disease that is beyond his control, and knows that he is dying, but none of that has really never mattered to him. All he sees is a little boy who loves life, and he sees a little boy who is crazy about video games, the Internet, music (he especially loves country music, in particular, Reba McEntire and Ronnie Milsap), and baseball. He also sees a little boy who is known for his king-sized burps, love for pizza and hotdogs, and collecting Poke'man cards. He has a collection that is the envy of all the kids in the neigborhood.
Jose' is often bothered when kids tease his friend, and he will often stick his neck out and go all out to defend his friend. He has gotten into several fights with older boys who have teased Johnny, and he will do all he can to protect Johnny from catcalls from other kids. He will also defend his friend's brothers or sisters, many, of whom, are in similar shape to Johnny: a lot of THEM are in wheelchairs or are noticeably disabled in one way or another.
Sometimes people make fun of Jose' because he is friends to this little disabled boy, but Jose' has told them time and time again that Johnny is a kid, too, and he deserves a friend, too, just like anyone else does. Yet, Jose' feels bad because he knows his best friend is sick, and nothing much can be done to help him. Still, he is glad that he is there for him, and he will remain Johnny's best friend as long as possible.
