About an accident, as witnessed by a young teenaged girl.
I don't think I shall ever sleep again.
For each time I close my eyes, I can still see IT. "IT" being the accident in which a young child was killed--and I saw it happen, with my very own eyes.
It was about one year ago, when it happened. I was then living in Little Rock, Arkansas, and I was visiting my Grampy Amos' farm in the country. There was a red dirt road that ran in front of the farm my Grampy Amos and Granmy Ellie lived at, and hardly any cars went by; but that day, a little boy was playing with some rocks in the road; and this green car came out of nowhere and struck the child at a high rate of speed. It happened in a matter of seconds. One minute, there was this little red-headed boy about five playing with his rocks in the middle of the road, and the next, there was this car, and this car ran RIGHT OVER the little boy! The car then sped off. The little boy then lay in the road, his head split open and bleeding profusely, and he was then limp and not moving.
It scared the living hell out of me. I ran back to Granpy Amos and Granma Ellie's farm, and I had them call for an ambulance. I told them a little kid had just been hit by a car, and from the looks of it, the kid had been badly hurt. I was shaking as I waited and watched for the ambulance. I was so scared that the kid was dying..or was ALREADY dead.
I heard the keening wail of the ambulance siren as it approached, and it got louder and louder. It was soon in front of the farm, and I watched the paramedics as they tried to take care of the boy. Soon, they loaded him up in the rear of the ambulance, and the ambulance then sped away with its young patient.
I then went upstairs, where I then got sick to my stomach and threw up. I couldn't get the image of the kid's busted head out of my mind. I was sure I had seen parts of his brain exposed. I was sure he was dead..or was in the process OF dying. I was then trying to read a book, when there was a knock at the door. I then heard Granpy Amos calling my name. When I went downstairs, there was a policeman in uniform, wanting to talk to me.
He wanted to talk to me because I was the one who had witnessed the accident.
All the time he talked to me (his name was Officer Rivera, according to the badge he wore on his uniform), my stomach was flopping around like pancakes cooking in a griddle, and it was all I could do to keep from throwing up onto his expensive shoes he wore. Still, I tried to remain reasonably calm, as I gave him the details of what I had seen.
It has now been a year since that time, and I still can't sleep all that well at night. I still see the kid lying dead in the road, his head split open like a busted jack-o-lantern, and his small, freckled face the color of blueberries. It turned out that the kid had died shortly after the accident, and he had been only five-and-a-half years old. His name was Josiah Trager, and he lived up the way from my Granpy Amos and Granmy Ellie. The accident had happened because Josiah was totally deaf, and he didn't hear the car approaching as he played with his rocks in the middle of the road, and by then, before he could react to get out of the way, it had been too late.
I still cry whenever I think of Josiah because he never got the chance to grow up or make something out of himself, and the way he died didn't seem fair. A lady on a cellphone was the one who had hit the little boy, and she was too busy talking on the phone to pay attention to her driving; and now she was in jail, facing murder charges. I also cry because the kid was handicapped, and if he had been able to hear the car approaching, he would probably still be alive today.
I no longer drive my car because I have this fear of hitting somebody with MY car, and I don't want to live with that lest this happen. I don't think I would be able to handle it.
Then people wonder why I am often so emotional in nature or why I don't talk about the accident I witnessed a year ago. Wouldn't YOU be if you had seen a little child who didn't deserve to die die in front of YOU??
I enjoyed your story. I had to look at your site as you are so kind to post reviews. There is a deaf boy that I have watched grow up just around the corner from me. He used to play in the puddle at the corner and I always knew he would get hit by a car. Sure enough, he did. Fortunately he survived. I am a Traffic Reconstructionist, and your story was very touching and of course about a subject near to my heart. God bless.
