     Something that still puzzles us.

Man or Angel?

Some years back, when my husband Jim and I had an old British Leyland Princess, we often used to see a man walking the highway, always in the direction in which we were travelling. I think the very first time we saw him, he was trying to thumb a lift.

Normally we would not now stop to pick up a stranger as there have been to many people attacked after doing so. But in this particular case, for some reason, we felt it was right so we did stop and we took him as far along the road as we were able. He told us he was out of work because he had been ill, and he had walked into town apparently looking for work.

After that first time, we seemed to come across him quite often, always going in our direction, and not just in our own area. After several months of this, it really seemed rather strange. He was not particularly well dressed, being out of work, but he did not look as unkempt as the ‘men-of-the-road’ often do.

One day shortly before Christmas that year, we were driving quite a distance from home when who should we see but this gentleman, again walking in the direction we were travelling. As we came up behind him, he turned and looked over his shoulder at us and we stopped and asked him if he would like a lift. He got into the car and we chatted back and forth. Then as we approached a major T-junction he asked to be set down there, he was going left and we were going right. We offered to take him to the town he was heading for, as it was quite a distance but he said ‘no,’ that it would be fine right here.

He got out of the car and started to walk away, Jim and I looked at each other, and I knew he was thinking the same thoughts I was. I got out of the car and went after the man and asked him if he would come to our house for Christmas dinner, if he would phone, we could pick him up. I wrote our address and phone number on a piece of paper and handed it to him and with a strange little smile on his face he tucked it into his jacket pocket and turned and walked away without a word.

We never ever saw him again.

Was that just coincidence?

Was he just a man or was he an angel?

I believe in God-incidence!! But I am still wondering!

The story of the "Angel needs a ride" goes back to pre-biblical accounts, actually. Sir Bacon once said "Forget not charity, lest you drive angels from your door." and based it upon an account of Zeus and Hermes venturing through towns to find charitable souls. Unable to find any, they finally came to a house with an elderly couple with meager possessions. They shared selflessly with the two gods, unknowing of the true identities until the old matron noticed the cups were refilling themselves. As a reward, they were made caretakers of a grand temple which the house was metamorphosised into, and granted a single wish-that they would never have to outlive each other. So it became that when they were to die, they intertwined in a final embrace, and became a sacred oak.

Other accounts I have heard from truckers and travlers in my travels have been of the hitchhiker's spirit, a benevolent entity with golden eyes and long flowing hair which aids troubled relationships or potential disasters. The accounts of this being are numerous and reputable, even being shown on the "Fact or Myth" show aired on Fox and Sci-Fi.

well, it's food for thought, but you should know the probability of a person being attacked by a hitchhiker is actually less than dying in a plane crash. Most of us are rainbow kids, or deadheads, or simply people in need.

Still, it never hurts to keep a weapon! Use your judgement, and consider that long haired individuals are less likely to attack if they have any sense, merely because there is too much possibility of leaving forensic evidence with those long flowing manes, and it is something of a liability in fighting situations.

Cheers on your charity!

Loved this story, Jackie. Could be an angel, but since I love ghost stories, I'm guessing he's a poor lost wandering ghost!

What a mystery - but in one form or another, an angel.

What would an angel be thumbing down the road? To see if someone would be kind enough to give him a ride and invite him to Christmas dinner? Who am I to second-guess.
