Many talents from the black community leave Muncie Indiana the first chance they get. These are people who refuse to remain silent in old ways. Backwardness in politics and progress refuse to realize that race relations are still stuck in the 1950s, and people would rather leave than grieve.
"Try to remember" (Editorial Comment by Muncie Resident Cynth''ya Lewis Reed)
A Back-to-Muncie ballad for some might go like this: "Conjure, conjure, conjure up a recollection of times when in the lunchroom at Northside - where no black face had gone before desegregation - times when no one wanted to share their white milk with me, not even a straw when mine fell on the floor, and I was afraid to leave my bench seat for fear that someone would do something nasty to my food, and that''s how I convinced myself that aloneness was okay. ... And I return to this every four years, exactly the way I left it."Someday, I hope these words will be untrue as a reason for those who never want to return. I wish one day to witness outrageous success for all who come here and remain.© 2003 by cynth''ya lewis reed
