A family has learned much since adopting their child. The family lives in Tennessee; Ronee' came to them from the Bayou Cajun Country in Louisiana when she was a small baby.
*NOTE! This isn't just about Ronee'; some of the other children (Johnny, Jodie, Barbara, Roberto, Lightning, etc.) will also be featured. I know I write a lot about Ronee', but this came about at the spur of the moment. (SORry, Karla! ;) )
Life for us has certainly been interesting ever since we first adopted our daughter nearly 10 years ago. Ronee' came to us when she was just 3 months old, tiny, helpless, and suffering from serious breathing problems, but she has taught us more about perseverance and courage than most people.
Ronee' was a lot tougher than her outward appearance suggested, and she still continues to defy the odds today.
She is now ten, ten-and-a-half years old, and she has overcome much heartache in her young life. She has significant special needs, but they haven't daunted her young and zestful spirit, and she has such an engaging (if slightly mischevious) personality that has a way of grabbing people's attention. She is funny, spontaneous, extremely outgoing, and very smart (sometimes TOO smart for her own good, I sometimes say!).
She suffers from arthritis and recently had knee replacement surgery, but from the way she zips around like a little cheetah on her crutches, one would never know it unless they see the scars on her knee, and if she is ever in a lot of pain, you would never know it a lot of the time because most of the time she is laughing or smiling. She is extremely active, and it exhausts us just watching her zipping from place to place. One can hardly keep up with her anyway, but especially now since having her surgery.
Ronee' loves to do many things. She loves to sing (she is well on her way to becoming a new young star in country music), play music (she is very gifted at learning new songs; she is quick to pick up any new melody she hears after only a few times), read (she is a very voracious reader; she can read just about any book she gets her little hands on), watch television (nature documentaries and the classic Bugs Bunny cartoons or the Nickolodeon cartoons like "Rugrats", "SpongeBob Squarepants", and "The Wild Thornberrys" are her favorites), draw, write stories or poetry (she has notebooks chock full of her writings or artwork), and dance. Even though she is on crutches and wears leg braces, she still manages to bounce in time to a song she hears on the radio, and she really enjoys herself.
She also loves to eat. And BOY, can she EVER put food away! Sure, she is allergic to peanuts (or all nuts!), but she knows well enough to stay away from nuts or foods made with nuts as part of its ingredients. She is NOT stupid. She also loves drinking soda pop (Coke Classic or rootbeer are her favorites), and if one isn't careful, she can drink more than one can at a time (but then she is spending the next several hours burping her head off, which is embarrassing if she does it in front of company or strangers!). She figures since she is so little, maybe the extra food will help her grow or gain some weight. I don't know, but she is a little piggy at times, and besides, we are afraid she may eat so much she may make herself sick!
Ronee' is a child full of questions. If she doesn't know the answer to something, she'll ask, and then if we can't answer, she'll be looking at an encyclopedia or a dictionary trying to figure out the answers! She isn't shy, and she can go up to anyone and somehow feel comfortable. She is also a child full of empathy, especially towards other disabled children, and she will more than gladly take them under her wing, where she will then offer comfort, hope, or even a prayer. She somehow always manages to make someone who is hurting feel better, even though she may be hurting herself.
She has had to grow up faster than most kids her age because of her health needs; but she still finds plenty of time to be a kid, and this is when she is happiest. She loves to play, and the more time she has to play, the happier she is. Sure, there are times when she gets moody or turns sad on us, but we offer her comfort, and it isn't long before her former cheerful self returns. She is very mercurial in nature, and this is one of the reasons why life with her is oftentimes so special. Life with her is nothing but a big adventure or an ongoing learning experience.
A wonderful start to this series Karen, keep it up.. I sure missed reading these stories while I was away but I am back and catching up or trying too LOL. Keep up the great work...
