Excerpt
CHAPTER ONE
“Not tonight,” Annie sighed as she scribbled the words onto the paper. She didn’t want to be rude, but she couldn’t allow herself to be happy. Today…she would mourn. Her mind drifted back to that horrible day, four years ago, when someone told her that her mother had been killed. A drunk driver crossed the centerline. Annie bit the corner of her lip as the police officer’s voice haunted her memory again. Going on a date was the last thing on her mind. She just wanted to be left alone.
The force from the pen created a mess of ink as it leaked onto the white paper and the edge of her palm. Annie looked around the classroom to see if anyone was looking before she wet her finger and began wiping the black streaks from her hand.
The open classroom windows brought in the smell of honeysuckle, making it obvious that spring had arrived. Annie smiled as she watched the squirrels playing on the front lawn of the university. Then her smile slowly faded as feelings of guilt entered her mind.
She folded the letter and passed it back to Mark. He had a crush on her since the ninth grade. Annie winced at his frown and knew that her rejection hurt him…again. She despised hurting his feelings, but she had no interest in getting serious with anyone. She knew that the anniversary of her mother’s death caused her emotions to run wild. Taking a chance on being vulnerable wasn’t something she was willing to do.
