Jonah, Wesley, and Bunker could tell even from their distant vantage point that Parker was taken aback by what he saw. After a few minutes, Parker followed the circuitous pathway that had been developed by the first responders trying to avoid sinking into the bog, and approached Jonah, Wesley, and Bunker.
“I’ll tell you,” Parker said, “but I don’t think you’ll want to see this one.”
Bunker nodded.
“The French called it ‘the breaking wheel,’ but all you need to do is strip someone naked, tie ‘em spread-eagle, use some pieces of wood to lift their joints up a few inches—lift all of their joints—and then smash each joint and break each bone with an iron rod. It must have taken hours, and a healthy young man might have survived for days after it was done. I’m sure there are ways, but I personally don’t know how you could inflict more pain onto a human body. We’ll have to do X-rays, I guess. I don’t actually know. Death probably finally comes from…I don’t actually know that. I’ll have to look it up in some medieval torture book.”
