Chapter One
Festive ornaments gracefully trimmed the Maxwell household. The fireplace mantel served for the home of evergreen swags, delicately scented pillar candles, and three oversized stockings in the classic red and white color scheme displaying those timeless words: Faith, Hope, and Love. Just inches shy of scraping the vaulted ceiling’s incline stood a marvelously adorned tree with attractively giftwrapped boxes arranged beneath it. Amazingly, the elegant décor appeared to have been decorated by an interior design professional and not a busy mother.
“Grits … fruit salad … his favorite brand of orange juice,” the woman with a green apron tied securely about her waist mumbled aloud. “I think I have everything,” she stated purposefully with a finger resting upon her lips, and then peered up towards the ceiling, “except for my daughters.” After flipping a switch on the fourteen-cup, stainless steel coffeemaker, she unraveled the strings from the small of her back, and tossed the apron aside.
Soon, the aroma of freshly brewed Colombian coffee mingled with the appetizing smell of homemade cinnamon crumb cake muffins and a pan seared turkey bacon and sausage breakfast casserole. The dining room table was set for nine with long stem glassware awaiting servings of the sparkling non-alcoholic mimosa. Instrumental Christmas hymns softly played in the background. It was the beginning of December, the most wonderful time of the year.
“Are you going to stay in bed all morning?” Elisha’s overbearing, otherwise usually chipper voice, invaded Charity’s morning slumber. “Mama made breakfast, so you need to be downstairs in five minutes or she’s going to have a conniption.”
Charity jotted open one eye with her face still partially covered by the cushiony oversized body pillow she laid sprawled across. After an invigorative yawn with extended arms, she managed to sit up in the bed to acknowledge her sister’s command.
“Well, good morning to you too …” Charity half-smiled at Elisha who was now dutifully straightening the crème colored sheets to a matching twin bed in their childhood bedroom.
“Girl, you know Mama. If you stay in that bed one minute longer, she’s going to—”
Elisha’s sentence was snapped in two by a loud, repetitive pound at the door. The two startled women briefly stared at one another before Charity scrambled to get out of bed.
