Doris is a land-dwelling tortoise, which means that she cannot swim. Doris has a purple shell with large white polka dots and five limbs instead of four.
Her mother has warned her that Ravens are tortoises' worst enemies and they should be avoided at all cost.
Her only wish is to find a friend that will love her in spite of her physical appearance. One day, Doris meets a new tortoise name Mable. They become friends. Doris and Mable are playing along the riverbank when four mean tortoises appear. Beth, the lead tortoise, dares Doris to swim; she refuses. So Beth throws Doris into the river and leaves her to drown. Suddenly, one of Doris' special gifts manifests itself; she turns into a large black Raven.

Excerpt
"Mother why won't anyone play with me? Am I ugly, mother?" Doris asks as tears stream down her cheeks.
"No my precious, you look different because you are special. Those tortoises are just being cruel. GOD has given you a special gift and someday it will surface... you'll see," said her mother. "Remember you are beautiful from the inside out. Someday you will find a friend who will love you regardless of your physical exterior," her mother said as she stroked Doris' shell.
