"Copperhead" is a very well written historical novel set in the era just prior to the Revolutionary War. The location is North Carolina on a plantation and the main characters are a retired British general and his family and a young injured Indian boy. The plot centers around the attempts of the retired soldier to heal and save the life of the Indian despite the wishes of his son and his family, who want to kill the savage. A granddaughter falls in love with the Indian, causing his banishment to England. The writing gives the feel of the period without being over done and offers enough period language to make the story feel authentic, yet leaves enough in common English to allow the story to move quickly and flow easily. Many years and tribulations pass before Miriam, in a Romeo and Juliet moment, tells Wudigeas "I love you." The phrase serves as a starting gun for the couple's real hardships. Miriam's father, William, hates Wudigeas and connives to separate him from Miriam. The novel's portraits of life in both Colonial America and 18th-century England ring true.
