I looked at the gaping hole in the wall, where the false door had once been. A breath like the pages of an ancient scroll issued from the doorway of night and brushed my nostrils.
“Inside there?”
“Yes. You must go beyond. But you may only bring one wife out. You must finally weigh your own heart and decide. Which wife? If you choose to save Sheshen you will emerge back into the land of Egypt in your time. Choose Tetisheri, and you will emerge in the Egypt of her time to live your lives together on the Delta of the Nile. But to succeed at all, you must complete your task before the new dawning or both wives will be lost... and much more.”
I GAZED into the depths of the black void in the tomb wall and I felt my old sense of willing surrender to the unknown sliding over me.
I had always found it easy to slip from the light of reason and normality into the shadows of Egypt’s mystery with its frisson of death, magic and unseen forces, but there were dangers, I knew, not just to my life, but perhaps to my very soul.
‘When you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you,’ the philosopher said.
The slippery descent into hell?
Damnation certainly anointed much of its activity with a kind of divine unction, I had often reflected. In the lubricity of sex (how could sin ever feel so tender?) In the flow of whisky, the softness of a kiss, or even, no doubt, the slip of playing cards in the gambler’s hands, the smoothly spreading glow of a narcotic, the squeeze of the assassin’s trigger or the slide of a knife point into flesh.
I went forward.
