Chapter 1: Introduction
Let the fun and games begin. Book signings when first imagined are a fabulous thing. You can usually see yourself with lines of loving fans wrapped around a building and you sitting behind a long table stocked with books that you’ve written, twirling a Cross® pen with your name engraved. You smile at the people in front of you who are obviously daydreaming about you… and your characters… or your plans to incorporate them into your next best. Ahh, the dream.
Well, it doesn’t usually happen that way—though I must say that I have seen authors who were not already celebrities have long lines of people just waiting to talk with them. It can go either way. Still, this is the part that you can’t really control. You have no idea regarding what that line-stander had to do to get to you—or not get to you. Maybe they had to work late, or couldn’t find someone to watch the kids (oh… maybe not, because there seems to be kids hanging from the overhead lighting system over your table), or, your fan may have fell sick at the last minute, or maybe they were stuck behind a slow-moving piece of farm equipment for two hours. The reasons are endless. And they don’t really matter, because you couldn’t have done anything about those situations anyway.
But there are some things that are under your control, and those things can turn a mediocre book signing into a great one, and a great book signing into a fantastic one. It can even turn a bad one into an okay one. When you control things, those are the things that can tip the scale towards success.
Do you have to do any of the things I tell you? Of course not. Some of these suggestions may be way outside your realm of desire, ability, interest, or personality. Matters not. Choose what you like. Discard the rest. (By the way, that’s the same advice you should be taking for the “tips” you receive from others about actually writing books.)
I’ve tried to make the things covered here easy and pain-free. All things are relative of course. It might be that you choose one or two of these ideas, then add more as you become more comfortable putting yourself “out there” for the world to physically see. For those of a more outgoing nature, a great deal of what I have to offer may be common sense, or you’ll have a feeling of “I can do that” almost immediately.
So, because I want this little gem to be a quick and easy guide, I won’t go into this intro any more deeply. It’s time to move on to the meat of a book signing. Let’s start!
