This book is about how the author went back to the Bible to learn about faith after his son died because he believed what other taught him. He discovered assumptions taught that were not true.
Larry thought ‘faith’ required him to stop his son’s insulin in order to trust God for healing. The result of his presumption was death. As a consequence, the author wants to warn others about teachers who think they are teaching faith, when in fact they are teaching presumption. His ensuing search for scriptural support of his beliefs uncovered surprising results about assumptions we make on traditional subjects in the Bible. Assumptions are identified and scriptures given to show how they could be wrong. A clear definition of faith reveals how we are not responsible if a miracle of healing does not happen. A call for unity in the Body of Christ, and the need for each of us to read the Bible and confirm what we are taught, is promoted. The author concludes with a chapter about the sovereignty of God, and a challenge to readers.

In times past, I assumed that the traditions and teachings handed down to me by my church leaders were true. I did not question them. I do now! I know nowadays, to examine everything with the light of the word of God. To, “Test all things; hold fast what is good.” The catastrophe of my son’s death drove me to study the Bible carefully for myself. I learned in a very painful way not to rely solely on what someone else tells me the scriptures mean, or on isolated scriptures. I no longer accept as true, unsubstantiated claims of Bible teachers. Now, when I am taught something, I ask myself, “What does the Bible say?” Using the Bible by taking scripture out of context is Satan’s way of combating God’s people for the purpose of our destruction. Another way Satan deceives us, is to make us think that a particular verse was meant for some other group of people. If we buy into that, we can pick and choose the scripture we want to live by, and ignore the ones that convict us.
It has been my custom for several years now to use the One Year Bible as a guide for a minimum daily Bible reading. From time to time the Holy Spirit prompts me to look into a particular subject in greater detail. This book is a record of the things I have learned from my studies and how I perceive things to be in this stage of my growth in Jesus Christ. As I said, “It is not meant to tell you, how you should believe.” I have found that my convictions about Scripture change as my understanding of God’s Word becomes clearer. What I understood about the Bible last year is different than what I comprehend today. It is the process I am going through, to work out my own salvation with fear and trembling as God works His will in my life.5
