The car alarm blared at 2:30am. Brian jumped from the bed and rushed out of the room with Evan not too far behind. “Stay here,” he warned, rushing down the stairs.
Evan heart pounded in her chest as Brian opened the front door and disappeared out into the night. A moment, two, she wasn’t sure, but the silence was killing her. Slowly, she crept down the stairs. “Brian,” she whispered.
The front door swung open, and Brian came back in, carrying something in his hand. He flicked on the light, showing her a red brick. Wrapped around it was a piece of paper held on with a rubber band.
“What is it?” Evan asked.
Brian pulled off the rubber band and took off the paper. “It’s a note.”
Evan heart sank as she read the words:
You can’t hide from the truth, Dr. Grant.
