This book was designed by Attorney John Del Buono, and c0-authored with his wife, author, Barbara Del Buono, as a tool his clients could use in the privacy of their own marriage to reconcile their marriage.
When Two Become One is a practical guide for couples to use to achieve a happy marriage. It allows them to do this in the privacy of their own home, and to maintain their dignity while solving problems in their relationship and marriage. They can easily discern if the degree of love that exists between them is meaningful enough for a good marriage.
“It behooves every person about to be married, and those already in marriage, to discover the level of maturity of yourself and the person you are married to. Without knowing this, you will constantly wonder—what you are doing wrong and why you cannot get along with this person you thought you loved.” Attorney John Del Buono
The authors show you specifically where to look for the kind of love you want from each other. They demonstrate how all aspects of your life have affected you and have caused you to be the kind of loving person you offer to your partner and he or she to you.
“The degree of love in your life is not an unchangeable force. If you want to love with a deeper quality and a more intense passion, you have the free will to learn how to do so.” Barbara Del Buono
Excerpt
Do either of you give the other the silent treatment?
This form of punishment aimed at your marriage partner is very destructive to you and your spouse. It is a sign of deep-seated immaturity. It is another form of walking away from the problem in your marriage without the embarrassment or inconvenience of leaving home. It can be a worse solution than walking away because you are now just walking within. That can cause more serious problems for you, personally, than those you have with your partner.
Do you habitually spend more money than your have?
The self-control of two people moving in unison is at stake if you habitually spend more money than you make. An agreed upon budget is a must if you are to begin to cope with
the problem as a couple. You cannot continue this pattern without serious consequences
resulting. Unless you agree to work together to solve the problem, your marriage relationship will be seriously affected.
Do either of you do things to avoid sexual relations with the other?
If you do, you are avoiding another problem about which you refuse to talk with your partner. This is like a cancer on your marriage; you cannot hide it for long. It will grow and kill your marriage unless you discuss this avoidance with each other.
Are you as affectionate with each other as each of your would like to be?
Displaying affection is often a bone of contention in a marriage yet it is the easiest of all complaints to satisfy. Each of you came to this marriage from backgrounds that taught you certain rules concerning affectionate overtures. But now you are in a situation where accommodation of each other is essential. It is okay to learn new rules that suit you and your partner in your marriage.
Do either of you allow a family member to ridicule the other in your presence?
If this kind of conversation takes place, it is a very serious matter that will breed feelings of contempt toward the marriage partner if allowed to continue. You chose to marry your spouse because you loved him/her. Allowing anyone, particularly family, to ridicule this person in front of you is an insult to the decision you made and to your partner. You must take action so that your family members will know that you will not tolerate it.

"Thought provoking and refreshing... It reflects my own views on marriage and delves deeper into aspects that I would not have thought to discuss, although the points should be discussed." Suzanne Irzyk, Home-School Parent
