Under the bed, Glinda noticed a small brown bag whose contents proved to be a picture of the Gales taken at a country fair and a small notebook, in which the writing was in Dorothy's concise hand. Sitting on the edge of the bed, Glinda felt as if she was opening her Book of Records as she read the brief notes Dorothy had written in her diary. Now you or I, dear reader, might feel somewhat hesitant and as if we were intruders if presented with the opportunity to read a friend's diary. However, we must remember that to the Sorceress Glinda, most everything is an open book! For this reason, I hope you will forgive Glinda if you are uncomfortable with her inquisitiveness!
"Monday, the last Monday in Kansas," started the final page. "I sometimes wonder 'bout the circumstances that resulted in my life changing so greatly after my visit to Oz," wrote the little girl. "I know there are other children who never find their way there, even once. I guess I'm just about the luckiest girl that ever lived to find so much love both with Unc' Henry, Aunt Em and with my friends in Oz. I have made one promise to myself, now that I'm going to live in the Emerald City with Ozma. When I get up in the morning and look myself in the mirror, I want to be sure that the girl that's me who looks back, always remembers to share the love I've found with whomever I meet that just might need some encouragement. No matter how long I live in Ozma's palace, I'll always be thinking about all the less lucky little girls who still haven't found their own road to Oz and could use a friend."
