Hi, Ron. The "paranormal" element is actually reincarnation as opposed to things that go bump in the night. This is not really a spoiler; it becomes obvious fairly early on in the story that this is the case, but why it matters and how we get there unfolds throughout the tale.
I pride myself on my research, and not only spent time reviewing primary source documents but also time in New Orleans, Vacherie, and other Louisiana locations to do "boots on the ground" research at historical homes, interviewing residents, etc.

I like historical fiction that is rooted in reality. Just like I would see if I were living in that time. That kind of writing takes tremendous research to get things authentic. I know there is an aura of mystique around the Louisiana people and the mysteries of the bayous. I have been by the bayou here at Brazos Bend State Park when night fell and all the night creatures came out making mysterious sounds muffled by the low fog that crept in, making everything even more creepy and surreal, but familiar and benign to me--comforting like the warm, humid air. I'm sure this is where all the paranormal stuff came from--fear of the night and unknown. Stephen King has made millions with this stuff. Most of it is junk fiction.
