Cooperation and imagination are the key words in this story of Nick(10) and Teresa(5) and their trip to their nearby beach. The story is great for children 10 and under. The vibrant colors and realistic art captures the colors that make Kaua'i "the Graden Island". Even babies are drawn to the beautiful pictures.
Excerpt
Nick was 10 years old and his sister, Teresa, was 5. They lived in Hawaii…the only state that is completely surrounded by ocean. It is made up of many islands. The island that Nick and Teresa lived on was called Kaua’i. They call Kaua’i “The Garden Island” because so many beautiful plants grow there.
It was Saturday…and after a long week of school, Nick and Teresa asked their parents if they could go play at the beach. Mom said: “I think that’s a great idea”. So, they all got into the car and drove down to the beach.
When they got to the beach, their mother and father laid down on big beach towels. Mom wanted to catch up on her reading and Dad liked to watch the surfers ride the waves. Nick and Teresa decided that the first thing they would do is build a sand castle.

BOOKS 'N BYTES - A LITTLE BEACH VACATION
After the rush of the end of a school year, the retreating waves uncovered Mark Huff's King of the Beach on my desk. Small press, desktop illustration and available from www.pagesofwonder.com, this slim story is a delightful example of the surprises in store for vacation readers. Set on the Garden Isle of Kaua'i where Huff lives, it tells a simple story of a brother and sister playing on the beach near where they live. What child hasn't built a sand castle and imagined being "King of the Beach" (or Queen of the World), standing tall against oncoming waves and a rising tide?
As an adoptive parent myself, I appreciated the easy incorporation of the children's family composition. It's all taken in stride...just like my high school daughter's retelling of her own adoption story in an end-of-the-year essay in language arts class.
Stories like this are are fun. So I have to hand it to Mark, he's provided me with a nice little Hawaiian vacation.

Mark Huff does a great job of storytelling. So many books miss that oral storytelling feel that he captures so well with his books. What I like about this story is that kids can really relate. While the story is about a family trip to the beach on Kauai it is based on the antics of our own kids and families and the humor rings true. I found myself laughing at the end of the story because I could see my family acting the same way.
