Nathan reflected on Min’s words. He secretly harbored some apprehension about the evening’s festivities. In a way, tonight would be a test; the first opportunity for him to see how Marife would comport herself among a large group of people.
With the exception of the recent month, for her entire life his fiancée had lived in a home with a dirt floor that had no hot water and no telephone. She had never been to a ballet, watched a live theater presentation or viewed an art exhibit. She had never used a charge card or eaten at a restaurant that did not use plastic eating utensils. She had never heard of Mozart or Gandhi. And she couldn’t name the mayor of her town, or state how many justices sat on her country’s supreme court.
Nathan examined his grandfather’s pocket watch and continued his pondering. In the public and private sector, he had seen important jobs withheld, promotions denied and club memberships withdrawn not because of the candidate, but due to negative evaluations of a candidate’s mate. In a few hours, he would expose a major part of his personal life for all to evaluate. He silently prayed that Marife would make him proud.
