Rose Collins is a 12 year old Melungeon girl form the mountains of Kentucky, recently orphaned. She is sent to live wiht her only relative, Aunt Margaret, near Bristol. Virginia Set in the early 50s during segregation she incounters bigotry from classmates.
I first saw the word Melungeon in the novel, Big Stone Gap. After doing extensive research, I decided to use this mixed race group as my main characters.
