As they laugh and dance along their merry way, tragedy strikes. Chapter 4 The girls were giggling over something Jessie had said. They linked arms and danced down the path like Dorothy in The Wizard of OZ. They were having so much fun; it had to be the best day of their lives. Jeannie said, “I bet the Studs are wondering where we are and complaining about starving to death because we’re late. Guess we’d better dance a little faster.” They giggled some more and picked up the pace. They were almost there. Joy thought she could hear the boys laughing. Their arms were still locked together and they were having a great time. Their laughter filtered through the trees drowning out even the songs of birds.
They let out strangled gasps as an ATV broke out of the woods and came straight at them. They didn’t have time to respond. They were like deer in headlights. The helmeted driver hit them at full speed, knocking them violently to the ground, and kept on going. Before they could let out more than a startled painful scream, another ATV barreled out of the woods and hit them again, driving them apart. It kept on going into the woods on the other side of the path. The third ATV burst out of the woods slightly to the right of the others. It caught Joy as she struggled to sit up from her distorted position. She let out one gurgled gasp and collapsed back to the ground. Jessie was bloody and seemed broken like a rag doll as she tried to move. She saw Joy and gave a strangled cry; then she saw Jeannie lying nearby. As she tried to drag herself to her friends, the pain in her head was too great and she limply hit the ground.
At the pond, the boys were instantly alert. It was unusual to hear ATVs this close to the swimming hole. It sounded like several. “Did you hear a scream?” Josh asked in a trembling voice. “Let’s go check it out. Something is horrible wrong. I can feel it,” Jason said. All the boys seemed to have a sixth sense when it came to their sisters. They ran out to the road and down it. They didn’t have far to go. At the sight of the mangled bodies of their sisters, they sprinted the last few yards. They bent over the girls and checked for pulses. Jeremy reached into the jeans he had grabbed off his bike on the way past and dialed 9-1-1. He was told to stay on the phone. They were afraid to move the girls and yet they felt they should do something to comfort them.
Josh had grabbed his jeans also and had his phone with him. He called his mother. Jeremy and Jason made their frantic calls home also. The boys bent over their sisters and gently held their bloody hands, talked softly to them and offered encouragement. They closed their eyes and prayed the girls would be all right. The girls looked so shattered, like delicate crystal that had been dropped on a tile floor.
