The treacherous trek divides one rescue into two, when the band loses one of its own. What happened to Blas? Did he slay Gabriel? Which one of the rescuers became lost? Did they find him? That morning, Zeke woke to a few ticklish feet on his belly. When he opened his eyes, he saw two birds. “Are you two lost?” he asked. “Do you think I’m a perch or something? You’ve got exactly three seconds to get off or I will teach you the meaning of flying!”
Elizabeth was about to open her beak but it was too late. Zeke kicked his back feet high up in the air, threw his neck back, and let out a great big gasp. Within seconds, the birds were airborne and feathers were everywhere.
Elizabeth went on the defensive. She quickly jumped on the horse’s snout and gave him a piece of her mind. “Hey! You! Why don’t you pick on somebody your own size? You have to pick on somebody as defenseless as us?”
She quickly got a wad of Zeke’s hair and yanked as hard as she could. “You like that, Goldilocks, huh?” She did everything she could to irritate the palomino, from kicking his nose to biting his ears, but she was like an ant on an elephant.
Unlike Elizabeth, her brother, Aaron, did not understand what was going on. While she continued her attack, he got out of the way. He became so focused on what he saw that everything else around him completely disappeared. With tunnel vision he caught sight of a hat hovering above the long yellow grass. He made his way towards it, ignoring everything and everyone.
Elias had gotten an early start on the day, and Tee, the opossum, somehow convinced Elias to let him join him. He told Elias that he and his family were in a band that played Spanish folk music. However, before he could finish, Elias’s attention was quickly diverted. He saw Aaron headed straight towards Tee at full speed.
They collided and knocked themselves back. A dazed and confused opossum looked straight ahead and saw his hat but could not make out who was wearing it.
Elizabeth dove off Zeke’s nose. She quickly swooped down on her little brother and checked him for scratches or cuts. When she saw that he was okay, she sighed in relief. Elizabeth and Aaron were two birds that had come a long way.
They were terns from the far northern side of the hemisphere. Elizabeth wanted to help for her little brother because she felt that he was not growing up as other little birds. His speech was not normal, his ability to comprehend was regressing, and lately he began acting strangely. Aaron could not understand why the other birds teased him. Elizabeth always stuck up for him because she knew he could not understand how mean everybody else was.
She picked him up from the ground and brushed him off, hoping that the bump had somehow knocked some sense into him, that somehow he had overcome the mental block that overwhelmed him. Elizabeth hoped for a miracle, but she was only fooling herself. Aaron was Aaron, and a simple bump was not going to remove his disabilities.
