What seemed like an hour to Faison, but in actuality was no more than thirty seconds, he finally reached the bundle and cautiously peeled back the pleated edge containing drapery hooks, revealing a fold. He could feel no movement beneath the brocade; it had to be David and Neith; it just had to be. With a gentle tug, the last of the fabric gave way to reveal immobile heads of David and Neith; their eyes closed and lips slightly apart; but, with no evidence of life.
“Stand back,” Faison yelled. “Get the paramedics over here, instantly.”
Pressing his fingers to the carotid arteries of both Neith and David, he tearfully looked up and cried out, “I feel their pulses. They’re alive.”
