Excerpt
She knows she is dying. There's something very important she must do. If only she can hold on long enough. Opening her eyes with great effort, she looked in the eyes of her husband, who was leaning over her, his eyes anxious and afraid. He saw her lips moving and he put his ear close to her mouth. He listened closely, then nodded in agreement. Her hand grew limp in his warm grasp. He could hear her breath rattle and he knew she was leaving him.Bowing his head over their clasped hands, he began to weep. When he raised his head, she was smiling her beautiful smile and her eyes were wide open and filled with wonder and excitement. Her face was radiant with joy. Her spirit rose up to meet her Lord. Her body remained to be buried by those who loved her.
Later, after the funeral, he found the small metal box where she had said it would be. Inside lay a feather, a coin and a smooth white stone with some strange marking etched into it. He put it with the baby's things. His baby son lay on the bed where his mother had died, kicking his little feet, gurgling and chuckling. Brown as a walnut, with a shock of coal black hair, his dark eyes were alight with laughter. The man looked at him with sorrow. Then, he picked him up and went out to the waiting buggy.
