Excerpt
The three traveled along a path filled with broken branches,dead leaves, fallen trees, and other greenery.
Colorful birds flew past them lighting on branches of trees ahead of them, giving the trio a curious look or maybe helping to lead the way.
After what seemed to be hours, the unicorn stopped in the middle of what appeared to be a secret garden someone had planted and tended.
Little benches made from split trees surrounded the most beautiful flowers Donovan had ever seen.Donovan and Baethan sat on one of the benches and rested. He watched the unicorn wandering around before noticing another unicorn - this one was tied with ropes, having been captured, and was trapped.
Donovan realized the first unicorn must also have been trapped,but had broken free and had gone looking for help.
“How can I help? I don’t know what to do,” remarked Donovan.
As he began to untie the ropes, Donovan heard a loud obnoxious voice screaming at him to get away from the unicorn,
and blaming him for setting the other one free. The sounds came from a creature of the night known as a Brollachan.
“I didn’t set him free. He must have gotten loose, trying to get away from you no doubt! Why are they captured? Let them go free,” insisted Donovan.
“You don’t understand - they belong to the owner of this secret garden. He’s an evil man who cast a spell on these two unicorns many years ago,” explained the Brollachan.
“Not long ago they were a young couple - Cassiopeia and Lothiriele - in love, betrothed, soon to be married.
“Donlan, the owner of all this land, was in love with Lothiriele and wanted to marry her. He promised her great wealth and riches, but when she rejected him, he cast a spell on them.
He had them turned into unicorns to keep them apart,” the Brollachan continued.
“He tried his best and kept them separated for a while but somehow they found one another and, even though they were no longer human, they were still in love and ran away together.
Donlan finally tracked them down and has held them captive since.
“Lothiriele is about to give birth. Once the baby is born,Donlan has promised to keep the baby and then cast another spell. I overheard him saying he was going to turn them into brass so they would never be able to be together.”
“What a terrible story! How can this be happening? It’s as if I’m in a fantasy - this can’t be happening in reality,” responded Donovan.
Just then several other Brollachans wandered into the garden and tried to recapture Cassiopeia. He bucked and stomped and tried to get away from them, but they were just too fast for him.
Baethan bounded into the air and attacked one of the Brollachans, but the others hit her and knocked her to the ground. Still wanting to help Cassiopeia and Lothiriele get loose,
Baethan shook herself and went fearlessly into the group of Brollachans, snarling and snapping.
Cassiopeia and Lothiriele also went wild with anger, stomping around, snorting, pounding their huge hoofs, making the earth shake with their strength.
Donovan finally was able to release Cassiopeia and Lothiriele and went to help Baethan.
“Go on, get out of here! Run away,” Donovan shouted at the unicorns. “Don’t worry about us - just get away while you can.”
The Brollachans proved too much for Donovan. They knocked him to the ground; he hit his head and lost consciousness.
Donovan and Baethan had saved the unicorns, but who would save them?
