Illustrates the importance of faith and fortitude in life and releasing oneself from the impactful challenging moments in life that everyone experiences: death of a loved one, poverty, disease, divorce, ridicule/embarrassment, etc. Built on the premise that we could ‘afford’ so much more--and live the life we truly want--if we use the tools in this book to free ourselves from a less than desirable existence.

Excerpt

INTRODUCTION
Each and every one of us faces countless challenges in our lives. From the moment we are born to the moment we die, we must overcome challenges to our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. There is no way to escape these challenges, and we cannot consciously control many of them. When we are born, our physical constitution dictates whether or not we will survive our first days; as we mature, the choices we make define our future. As we participate in the vast social networks that connect us with others, very little of what we do or say will influence others on a global scale and/or profound way.

We do, however, have significant influence over those who are closest to us, including ourselves. What we decide in our daily lives can have a direct and profound effect on our friends and families, our coworkers and neighbors, and even those whom we may never personally know but to whom we are connected by proximity and our actions. Most importantly, our decisions control the direction of our lives and have the power to bring us misery or happiness, poverty or wealth, illness or health. Our decisions chart the path that we will take and influence the quality of our lives.

Sadly, so few of us recognize the areas of our lives we do have control over or that our decisions are investments in our future. Those who do appreciate the consequences of their decisions are in a position to evaluate their choices and select a path that will lead to a desirable outcome. Others who fail to possess these talents may believe that they are powerless and lack the ability to change the direction of their lives for the better.

When we recognize that we control our own decisions, we recognize that we have the power to control our lives. This is no small thing! When we accept that we are intelligent, empowered persons who can make decisions that affect ourselves and others, we take ownership of those decisions and engage in choices that are ethical, appropriate, and beneficial.
Such decisions will minimize negative consequences and promote positive outcomes for ourselves and others around us.

This is the fourth book in a series of personal development books. The predecessors are The Navigator of Life, Management and Leadership by the 3Ps, and The Mature 64: Living life 8 by 8. I have ventured to highlight information with these previous writings with The Affordability Factor in an effort to assist the reader in understanding the congruency of the information and the building upon the previous books done in this book. It is my belief that The Affordability Factor provides the most liberating information I have been able to garner to date!

Craig N. Piso, Ph.D., President, Piso and Associates, LLC
I’ll set the stage for this remarkable, groundbreaking book by relating its key concepts and their practical application to a recent experience in my mid‐life, having just turned 55. I sold my first motorcycle 33 years ago upon getting married and “settling down” (we also had no room to store it at our apartment complex), a decision I regretted almost immediately. Now happily remarried for almost 11 years, I’ve been actively dreaming of owning a motorcycle again for the last 3 years but haven’t been able to “afford” one until recently, although money has not been the obstacle. Without sharing the many details of this personal quest, it took me 3 years to be ready to purchase a vintage motorcycle, eventually finding one almost identical in make, year, and model to the one I first owned at age 15! Having just purchased the bike this past month, I am now in my “mid‐life celebration”, riding the bike as I did in my youth, but with more
wisdom and good sense. The life experiences of riding and restoring this beautiful bike are tangibly and
symbolically fresh and renewing, as if the seemingly out of reach adventure I have been seeking suddenly knocked at my quiet suburban door! How was I able to launch this dramatic dream into present day reality, and how does this relate to “The Affordability Factor”?

“Affordability” is the psychological currency of change in our personal lives, without which we remain too “poor” to take appropriate and attractive risks, improve our lot in life, or embrace deeper changes within
ourselves as human beings. In both a literal and figurative sense, “Affordability” is about creating space and readiness for the experiences and outcomes that we desire, but all too often deny ourselves due to emotional discomfort and self‐doubt. Once any person increases his/her “Affordability Factor”, additional room and readiness are naturally available for movement to occur, whether we are talking about making a career decision, choosing a mate, publishing a novel, or finding and buying that vintage motorcycle!

This seminal book is two‐fold in its value: 1) You will understand the psychological underpinnings of the
concept of “Affordability”; and 2) You will master the tools for increasing the “Affordability Factor” in your own life, as well as facilitating growth in this enriching domain among others. At its essential core, this book will help you learn how to launch yourself toward your greater potential with an engrained sense of realistic confidence and determination, instead of allowing any blockages to inhibit your self‐actualization or the goal attainment that naturally flow from increased maturation and freedom.

A conference presenter told us recently that people generally find the means and strategies to accomplish their goals once they discover their passion with child‐like enthusiasm and optimism (as opposed to the commonly held belief that people must first have the means at their disposal before they will become passionate about their dream). “The Affordability Factor” clearly ascribes to the former principle in that Dr. Williams provides the framework and action steps for unleashing inner passion and healthy power, thereby launching people toward their dreams and goals with determination to work out the subsequent ground level details. Accordingly, now that I have my dream machine in an overcrowded garage, I’ll gladly create more space there so my wife can continue to store her car there this winter!
