The corporal left me at the sentry, where the Taro logo of the 24th Division flew. I hoisted my bag into a long, dimly lit Quonset hut, my home for the next year and a half. "Here's our new recruit," hollered a soldier splayed out on his cot in T-shirt and Army fatigues...Running water was forgotten. We take turns hauling a several-gallon can to a central station, fill it with water, bring it back and scoop up enough to heat in a metal bowl, and thus we shave and sponge bathe.
